Dev Patel is a British actor who has appeared in films like “Slumdog Millionaire,” “Lion,” and “The Personal History of David Copperfield.” He has received critical praise for his performances and has emerged as a notable actor in the profession.
Dev Patel is one of the most versatile performers today. After getting his big break in the Oscar-winning drama Slumdog Millionaire, he’s built a strong filmography that includes real-life dramas like Lion and Hotel Mumbai, period pieces like The Personal History of David Copperfield, the fantasy epic The Green Knight, and the light-hearted comedy The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and its sequel. Patel is now pursuing the tough action hero path with his directorial debut, Monkey Man, a nasty and gruesome action film with a harsh R rating.
It has been quite some time since the film was initially announced in 2018, and now, almost out of nowhere, it has arrived and has received tremendous accolades from reviewers. Here’s all we know about Dev Patel’s Monkey Man.
Is Monkey Man released?
Yes, Universal Pictures released Monkey Man on April 5, 2024. The film debuted opposite the horror precursor, The First Omen, from Disney-owned 20th Century Studios.
The film had its international debut on March 11, 2024, at South by Southwest in Austin, Texas. Monkey Man joined an excellent list of films at the festival, which includes The Fall Guy, Road House, The Idea of You, and Y2K.
How can I watch the Monkey Man movie?
Monkey Man will have an exclusive theatrical release. Netflix acquired Monkey Man in 2021, but since then, there hasn’t been much news about the movie. That was until late January 2024, when Universal Pictures and Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions uploaded the original trailer online, stating that the picture would now be distributed in cinemas after the streaming giant judged it “too controversial.” Peele was shown the picture early on and was so thrilled that he felt it merited a theatrical release.
Monkey Man will most certainly be available for streaming on Peacock after its theatrical debut, although no confirmation has been made as of yet. There is a slim possibility that a deal might be reached to enable the film to broadcast solely on Netflix instead. While nothing has been verified and this is just conjecture, it would not be the first time Universal has collaborated with one of its streaming service competitors, as seen with Argylle, which will be available on Apple TV+ shortly.
MONKEY MAN Trailer
Universal released the official trailer for Monkey Man on January 26, 2024. The first trailer for the film, set to “Beware Of The Boys (Mundian To Bach)” by Panjabi and Jay-Z, lasts more than three minutes and previews the film’s severe brutality as the central character starts on a murderous road of retribution.
On March 21, Universal published the second trailer for Monkey Man. The trailer replaces the Panjabi and Jay-Z song that accompanied the initial trailer with Phil Collins’s “In the Air Tonight.” The teaser also features various statements from reviewers who praise the film.
Universal aired a 30-second commercial for Monkey Man at Super Bowl LVIII on February 11, 2024. The trailer shows Dev Patel’s character traveling up an elevator while a voiceover says, “One small ember can burn down everything.”
What is the movie Monkey Man about?
A young man earns a meager living at an underground fight club where, night after night, more well-known fighters brutally beat him for money. After years of buried wrath, he devises a plan to infiltrate the city’s nefarious elite. As his childhood tragedy escalates, his oddly scarred hands launch an explosive campaign of vengeance against the ones who stole everything from him.
Monkey Man had previously been characterized as “John Wick in Mumbai,” and it seems that it will live up to that comparison while also drawing inspiration from the legend of Hanuman, an Indian hero who represents strength and courage.
Who stars in the new movie, Monkey Man?
As previously stated, Dev Patel appears in Monkey Guy as Kid, a mystery guy who works in an underground fight club and ends up pursuing vengeance on the individuals who stole everything from him when he was a boy. Patel earned a household celebrity after playing the primary role of Jamal in the Best Picture-winning film Slumdog Millionaire. In 2017, he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance as Saroo Brierley in Lion. Patel has also collaborated with directors like Danny Boyle, David Lowery, Garth Davis, Wes Anderson, M. Night Shyamalan, Neil Blomkamp, John Carney, and Armando Iannucci.
Several of Patel’s past co-stars will appear with him on screen, including Sharlto Copley from Chappie as Tiger, who manages the underground boxing club where Kid fights. Hotel Mumbai’s Vipin Sharma and Adithi Kalkunte play Alpha, a transgender lady who saves Kid and his mother, Neela.
The rest of the cast includes Sobhita Dhulipala (Made in Heaven) as Sita, a sex worker whom Kid befriends; Pitobash (Million Dollar Arm) as Kid’s wise-cracking coworker Alphonso; Ashwini Kalsekar (Ek Tha Hero) as Queenie, the shady nightclub owner who hires Kid; Sikandar Kher (Aarya) as Rana, the chief of police; and Makarand Deshpande (R) as the spiritual guru Baba Shakti.
