AKA, real name Kiernan Forbes, was killed in a shooting on Friday in Durban, South Africa. AKA was a famous South African rapper. He was 35.
After speaking with the local authorities, a “well-known rapper,” widely believed to be Forbes, was killed in a shooting incident outside of a popular nightspot on Durban’s Florida Road.
“It was confirmed that two men were killed, and one of them was a well-known rapper. I also know that one of the victims was a friend of mine. “Until the investigation has been concluded in its entirety, the names of the victims will not be released by the police,” Robert Netshiunda, a spokesperson for the law enforcement agency, told the outlet.
In a statement released on Saturday, Forbes’ parents confirmed their son had passed away. Tony and Lynn Forbes shared their grief over the loss of their son with The Post, saying, “It is with extreme sadness that we acknowledge the passing of our beloved son.” We are awaiting further information from the Durban Police Department at this time.
According to reports, the South African rapper was slated to perform in Durban on Friday. The new album, titled “Mass Country,” was scheduled to be released on February 27.
Paramedic Garrith Jamieson told TimesLIVE that the shooting occurred just after 10:15 p.m. local time and that, upon arriving, “paramedics met total chaos and a scene where two men, believed to be in their late 30s, sustained multiple gunshot wounds.”
“Paramedics assisted the men and unfortunately the first male had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and showed no signs of life and was declared deceased at the scene,” he added.
The second unidentified male victim later died, despite life-saving efforts, the outlet reported.
Fans and fellow artists flocked to Twitter and Instagram on Friday to share their condolences and heartbreak for AKA, who was born on Jan. 28, 1988.
The rapper had posted on Instagram earlier on Friday about the impending release of his album, and the comments section is now filled with emojis depicting shattered hearts. Additionally, it seemed as if he had tweeted only moments before the shooting, responding to a supporter online.
In the comments section, his devoted followers wrote “RIP” beside love emoticons and expressed their “worry” for the singer’s well-being. Others pleaded with the artist to publish anything that would demonstrate that he is still alive.
“Is it real dude, also known as, how are you doing?” said one of the users.
Someone another tweeted, “Are you feeling okay, mate?”
Another user pleaded with the first user, “We’re all waiting for you to tweet anything.”
He was recalled by Forbes’ parents as a “son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin, and friend,” but “most significantly, father to his beloved daughter, Kairo,” whom he shared with an ex-girlfriend named DJ Zinhle. Forbes and DJ Zinhle had a daughter together.
With songs like “Lemons (Lemonade),” “Fela in Versace,” and “All Eyes on Me,” the musician also known as Supa Mega has amassed more than 489,000 monthly listeners on Spotify. His greatest hits can be found on the platform. The track “Prada” was his most recent release, and it came out early this year.
Anele “Nelli” Tembe, the rapper’s fiancee, was killed in a tragic accident in 2021 when she fell to her death.
According to the statement released by the Forbes family, their son “was adored and he provided love in return.”
“In this time of sadness, we ask for your compassion, space, and time together as a family to discuss the days ahead.”
