THE NUN 2 is a direct sequel to the first The Nun film, which was a spin-off film in the expansive The Conjuring franchise. Since all of the films in the series that don’t have “The Conjuring” in their titles are technically spin-offs, we’re dealing with a sizable “family tree” at this point.
As with many other horror movies before it, negative reviews did not deter audiences from purchasing tickets for “The Nun II.” In its opening weekend in North American theaters, the sequel to the 2018 blockbuster earned an estimated $32.6 million.
For the record, we should mention that although The Nun sequel has the same rating as the original film, we prefer this sequel. Everything works better here, from the production quality and spectacular effects to the acting, character development, and overall plot.
The audience ranked it fifth out of the nine “Conjuring” films and awarded it a grade of C+ on the Cinema Score scale. Horror is arguably the most reliably critic-proof genre, at least in terms of opening weekend box office.
Nonetheless, both films are merely average experiences. In retrospect (and having rewatched the first film), we must acknowledge that despite receiving three splatters, the first film deserves only three minor splatters. The release date for The Nun 2 is September 8, 2023.
How scary is The Nun 2?
A few years have elapsed since the incidents of the first film in The Nun 2. And yes, we do receive a brief update on what has transpired in the interim. A clergyman in France was assassinated in his church under demonic circumstances in the year 1956. To put it lightly.
Therefore, Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) must confront Valak, the demon disguised as a nun, once more.
While The Nun’s main plot was somewhat uninteresting with numerous unrelated subplots, The Nun 2 devotes a great deal more time to pertinent story development. Obviously, one could also contend that the first film was responsible for setting the stage. However, this “excuse” is illogical, as “The Nun”-character had already been prominently featured in other The Conjuring films.
The Conjuring universe (specifically The Conjuring 2) and a spin-off film centered on the Annabelle puppet.
In any event, there are only two recurring characters in The Nun 2. We concentrate on Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) and Maurice (Jonathan Bloquet), as the minister from the first film is no longer present. In addition, there are a number of genuinely intriguing supporting characters this time around. I won’t go into specifics, but the outcome is a story with a bit more substance and emotion.
