The Walt Disney Company has a rich history of adapting popular rides and shows from its theme parks into feature films. One of its most well-known successes is the Pirates of the Caribbean film series, which introduced us to Captain Jack Sparrow. Disney has persisted in developing this concept, adapting numerous rides and shows into films. Now that they’ve seen the latest film, they’re ready to face the terrors of the Haunted Mansion for real.
Disney has maintained this trend with films like The Country Bears, Tomorrowland, and Jungle Cruise. Bert and Bertie are back at it, this time to film the thrilling Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Hawkeye. However, the famous Haunted Mansion 2023 ride appears to be the perfect candidate for a feature-length film adaptation.

The Haunted Mansion 2023 trailer
Gabbie and her little son Travis are introduced in the trailer as they settle into their new home, the fabled Haunted Mansion 2023. When they discover that the mansion is home to evil spirits, they seek help from a priest with high aspirations (Owen Wilson), a down-on-his-luck tour guide (LaKeith Stanfield), and a wise medium (Tiffany Haddish). The Black Widow Bride and the Hat Box Ghost (Jared Leto) also make frightening appearances as iconic spirits from the ride.
Guillermo Del Toro, director of The Shape of Water, was supposed to direct Haunted Mansion. After Del Toro’s script was deemed too scary, though, Justin Simien was brought in as a replacement. Because of his lifelong fascination with the Haunted Mansion attraction, Simien brings a unique perspective to the film.
Even though he is no longer the director, Del Toro still receives credit for authoring the script along with D. V. DeVincentis and Katie Dippold. This guarantees that Del Toro’s vision and aesthetic will be reflected in the finished picture. In his role as executive producer, Del Toro also helps shape the film’s atmosphere.
What is Haunted Mansion based on?
The Haunted Mansion has been a staple at theme parks for decades, thanks to its atmospheric mythos and captivating set design. Disney is now preparing an intriguing adventure-horror mashup based on this novel, so it seems like the timing is right for a film adaptation.
Eddie Murphy tried his hand at The Haunted Mansion in 2003, but the film fell flat because it didn’t feature any of the classic characters from the attraction, such as the Hat Box Ghost or the Black Widow Bride. Known for his award-winning film Dear White People, Justin Simien now brings his cinematic perspective to the Haunted Mansion.
As a lifelong fan of the attraction and a former member of the Disneyland cast, Simien promises to deliver an exciting and immersive experience on the big screen. Rosario Dawson stars as Gabbie, a single mother who moves to a strangely inexpensive house outside of New Orleans with her son Travis (Chase W. Dillon). As they begin to unpack and settle into their new home, they rapidly realize that they are not alone.
As the estate becomes infested with restless ghosts, the desperate priest Kent (Owen Wilson), the down-on-his-luck tour guide Ben (LaKeith Stanfield), and the clever medium Harriet (Tiffany Haddish) seek outside help. This motley crew of psychic investigators set out on a thrilling and dangerous mission to uncover the source of the eerie occurrences at the house.
Is Haunted Mansion 2023 a remake?
After being in development purgatory for twenty years, a new Haunted Mansion is now in the works. Dear White People’s writer/director Justin Simien kept things moving after Guillermo del Toro exited the project. Fans, like they are with many Hollywood productions, are wondering if there are plans for a sequel. Even more so if a mid- or post-credits scene is appended to the film for dramatic purposes.
Is Haunted Mansion a horror movie?
In 2023, Justin Simien will helm the supernatural horror comedy film Haunted Mansion, also known as The Haunted Mansion in several other languages. Starring LaKeith Stanfield, Tiffany Haddish, Owen Wilson, Danny DeVito, Rosario Dawson, Dan Levy, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Jared Leto, the picture also features a host of other A-listers.
The Haunted Mansion: Ghosts of the Past is the sequel to the 2003 film of the same name, and was produced by Walt Disney Pictures and Rideback. In the film, Gabbie (Dawson) and Travis (Chase W. Dillon) enlist the services of a group (Stanfield, Haddish, Wilson, and DeVito) to rid their home of the haunting spirits who have taken up residence there.
In July 2010, Guillermo del Toro, who planned to write and produce a reboot adaptation of The Haunted Mansion, announced that the film would be set in a heightened reality rather than the real world. In July of 2013, del Toro was removed from his position as director.
Years in development hell later, in August of 2020, Disney finally revealed Haunted Mansion, with Dippold attached to pen a new screenplay. By April 2021, Simien had negotiated to helm the film, and by September, he had been officially tapped to do so. The majority of the cast was announced between July and October, with the rest to come the following year. The bulk of the filming occurred between the middle of October 2021 and the end of February 2022.
Released in the United States on July 28, 2023, Haunted Mansion made its world debut on July 15 at Disneyland in Anaheim, California. Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures was in charge of producing the movie. The reviews for the film were all over the place.
