The film is credited with launching Eddie Murphy’s career and is widely regarded as one of the best comedies of all time.

Beverly Hills Cop II (1987) is a follow-up to the hugely popular 1984 action comedy film Beverly Hills Cop. It follows Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy), a Detroit police investigator, as he returns to Beverly Hills to assist his buddies in investigating a string of thefts in the rich metropolis.

This time, Axel is joined by his Beverly Hills Police Department (BHPD) colleagues Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) and John Taggart (John Ashton) to investigate the case of the “Alphabet Crimes,” a series of high-profile thefts targeting upscale establishments. As the inquiry progresses, they find a violent criminal organization that is motivated by more than just profit.

The sequel was another big office hit, collecting more than $150 million worldwide. While it did not achieve the same critical heights as the previous picture, it was generally well received by both viewers and critics. It is regarded as a good sequel that captures the essence of the original.

Beverly Hills Cop II inspired a third film, Beverly Hills Cop III (1994), and a television series that aired from 1994 to 1998.

Beverly Hills Cop III was released in 1994. After discovering that the killer of his employer had connections to Wonder World, an amusement park in California, Axel Foley returns to Los Angeles three years after the events of the second film. Reported budgetary differences led Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer to opt out of returning as producers, unlike in the prior two films.

When it came out, the picture was panned by critics and only made $42 million at the box office. In a subsequent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Murphy said “The third Beverly Hills Cop was garbage” as his criticism of the narrative.

It was planned to issue a sequel in the mid-1990s, but it never happened. Speculation of a fourth picture surfaced again in the late aughts and saw many development setbacks. In an interview with Playboy from 2015, Murphy discussed the upcoming fourth picture and said that the authors needed to “get that script right” before proceeding. “It has to be right” if Murphy was to say anything to the magazine about making the film. “Not constructed in a hasty manner in order to collect a large sum of money. I am not in need of more ones.
