Who got the best actor award at the Oscars in 2024? Cillian Murphy’s childhood school declares ‘No Homework Day’ after he wins his first Oscar

Following his first Oscar win for Best Actor in “Oppenheimer,” celebrations were in full swing at his alma mater the next day. The community, comprising teachers, parents, and young students, was enveloped in a wave of jubilation. “There was such a buzz of excitement we woke up to this morning,” said Sean Lyons, the headmaster of the all-boys Catholic institution, in a conversation with AFP. Murphy,  47, was a student at St. Anthony’s, nestled in the tidy neighborhood of Ballinlough in Cork, from 1982 through 1988.

“It left us wondering if it was true, that a gentleman from Ballinlough in Cork clinched an Oscar, an accolade of international repute!” exclaimed the teacher, his eyes shining behind his glasses. “He has planted a seed for countless learners, not solely in Ballinlough and St. Anthony’s but across Ireland, inspiring them that achieving on a worldwide platform is within reach,” Lyons mentioned.

Following a remarkable season of accolades, where Murphy garnered a BAFTA, and a Golden Globe, among other prizes, he ultimately clinched his first Oscar on Sunday. His award-winning role was that of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the American physicist credited with designing the atomic bomb.

Dublin Airport had a bit of fun at Kate’s expense by crudely editing a photo to show actor Cillian Murphy’s face on someone emerging from a plane waving an Irish flag.

The tweet from Dublin Airport stated: “Kate, our latest social media intern, did an outstanding job this morning snapping a photo of Cillian Murphy as he made his way back to Dublin Airport following his remarkable victory at the Oscars.”

In the comment section, Dublin Airport jokingly remarked: “Took us hours.”

Cillian Murphy was lavished with praise for his Oscar acceptance speech, becoming the first individual born in Ireland to clinch the coveted Best Actor accolade.

Cillian Murphy broke records for Ireland by claiming the Best Actor accolade at the Oscars, marking a first for his nation, through his role in the standout film, Oppenheimer, which swept the awards ceremony. The cinematic piece garnered critical acclaim, snagging awards for Best Picture, a Best Director accolade for Christopher Nolan, and Best Supporting Actor went to Robert Downey Jr. For his exceptional portrayal of physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, Murphy was bestowed with the Best Leading Actor honor.

J. Robert Oppenheimer, an American theoretical physicist, is most famous for being the director of the Manhattan Project’s Los Alamos Laboratory during World War II. His pivotal role in designing the atomic bomb earned him the title of “father of the atomic bomb.”. Born in New York City, Oppenheimer made significant contributions to theoretical physics, including the Born–Oppenheimer approximation and work on quantum mechanics. His guidance and expertise in science were crucial for the achievement of the project, which climaxed with the initial detonation of the atomic bomb on July 16, 1945.
