Smokey Robinson accused of sexual assault by four women in $50m lawsuit

Ex-housekeepers say the Motown star Smokey Robinson sexually assaulted them, put them in jail without a warrant, was careless, and abused women.

Motown legend William “Smokey” Robinson has been accused of sexual abuse and other wrongdoing by four women who worked as housekeepers for the Robinson family. They have only identified themselves as Jane Does 1, 2, 3, and 4.

A complaint sent to the Los Angeles Superior Court on May 6 includes charges such as sexual battery, false imprisonment, negligence, and violence against women. The lawsuit asks for $50 million in damages for all four women.

Robinson’s wife, Frances Robinson, is also named in the case. It claims that Robinson and Frances Robinson broke many labor laws by not paying the minimum wage, overtime, or rightly stating wages or creating a hostile work environment.

Smokey Robinson’s giant fame came from working in the music business for many years. In 1955, he started the Motown group the Miracles. Robinson is in both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Artists such as the Temptations and Marvin Gaye have credited Robinson with producing more than 4,000 songs.

The complaint, which was brought by the Los Angeles law firm Harris & Hayden, says that Robinson’s famous status made it scary for him to come forward with the claims. Attorney John Harris said this at a news gathering in Los Angeles: “Robinson’s status is different from that of his accusers.”

Harris stated, “The Robinsons employed Hispanic women who earned less than the minimum wage.” “Being low-income women in dangerous situations, they didn’t have the tools or choices they needed to avoid sexual assaults.”

Harris pointed out how weak Robinson’s critics were.

He said, “They were all afraid of not getting paid and not being able to pay their rent or feed their families.”

The complaint shows a trend in both the background of the accusers and the things they say. All four Jane Does say Robinson sexually assaulted them in the “blue bedroom” of his Chatsworth home, putting down a towel to protect the sheets before the attacks. Jane Doe 4’s story includes claims that Robinson raped her at his homes in Las Vegas and Bell Canyon. Robinson allegedly sexually assaulted Jane Doe 2 in the laundry room and garage of his Chatsworth home, locations beyond the reach of closed-circuit cameras.

He stated, “We believe Mr. Robinson is a sick serial rapist who requires intervention.”

All four women also say that Frances Robinson made the workplace unpleasant and that she often used “ethnically derogatory words and language.” According to the lawsuit, she did nothing to stop her husband from sexually assaulting other women, even though she knew about his past sexual misconduct and had settled cases with other women who had been sexually assaulted by him.

He said, “We think she knew her husband, Smokey Robinson, was doing wrong, and that she used their status and the fact that the client relied on their living wage to keep them in line.”

Robinson has not received a police report or a criminal charge, according to Hayden and Harris.
