The best horror movie genre is taking a turn with tarot cards in the new Tarot Horror Movie. Sony Pictures Entertainment unveiled the teaser for its new horror film Tarot on Tuesday. In the film, a group of adolescents unwittingly unleash horrific demonic spirits when they discover a deck of tarot cards and decide to swap readings.
“When a group of friends recklessly violates the sacred rule of Tarot readings – never use someone else’s deck – they unknowingly unleash an unspeakable evil trapped within the cursed cards,” the official description for the film states. “One by one, they come face to face with fate and end up in a race against death to escape the future foretold in their readings.”
Tarot is cowritten and codirected by Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg, who have previously written and produced films such as 2022’s Moonfall and last year’s Expend4bles.
The film stars Avantika from Mean Girls, Jacob Batalon from Spider-Man, Larsen Thompson, Harriet Slater from Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, and Adain Bradley from The Bold and the Beautiful.
The film comes after A24 earned one of 2023’s horror successes with Talk to Me, about a group of teenagers who discover they can communicate with ghosts via an embalmed hand they find at a party. Similarly to Tarot, the youths accidentally call demonic spirits while playing a hand game and are forced to meet the demons in reality.
How scary is the Tarot movie?
Tarot doesn’t exactly deliver the bone-chilling terror of classic horror movies. While it attempts to create a spooky atmosphere, it often relies on predictable jump scares and clichés to generate fear. The monstrous entities, though visually interesting, lack the depth and terror to truly unsettle viewers. Â
