Fede Álvarez’s Alien: Romulus is the ninth part of the Alien film series, one of cinema’s finest sci-fi movies. Of course, because of how horrific and nasty things can become when Xenomorphs are around, it ranks as one of the top horror movie series of all time.
Any time a new chapter in a long-running iconic franchise, such as this upcoming horror film, is announced, it raises a lot of questions, but given how complicated the Alien movie timeline has gotten in recent years, and with an FX original spin-off series from Noah Hawley in the works, this is a unique case. Allow us to try to clear up any misconceptions about the forthcoming sci-fi film Alien: Romulus.
What’s the plot of ‘Alien: Romulus’?
The narrative of Alien: Romulus is being kept extremely tight-lipped. Variety reports that the film would revolve around “a group of young people on a distant world, who find themselves in a confrontation with the most terrifying life form in the universe.” Spaeny said that the film is set in the same setting as Alien and Aliens. In terms of chronological, this falls somewhere in the center, since Prometheus and Alien: Covenant are prequels to Alien, while Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection continue the story of Aliens.
It’s unknown how closely Romulus will resemble the previous flicks. Sigourney Weaver’s famous role from the original films is stuck in time throughout the events of Romulus, while Michael Fassbender’s android David’s actions in the prequel films may or may not be important. What is sure is that it will be a real horror film that returns to the series’ origins.
All of the Alien films are horror pictures to some degree, but most of them also have other aims. Alien was a plain sci-fi horror film, but it was an action classic as well as a terrifying film, and the subsequent sequels and prequels were more similar to cerebral sci-fi with a lot of backstory around the horrors. Alien: Romulus, directed by Fede Álvarez, seems to want to terrify audiences, as seen by the trailers. In space, no one can hear you scream, but they will be at a packed movie theater in August.
When is the release date for ‘Alien: Romulus’?
Alien: Romulus will be released theatrically on August 16, 2024. That means we just have a few more days to wait! So, prepare to purchase those tickets, people.
The film was supposed to be distributed directly to streaming on Hulu, but it was changed to a theatrical release just before production began.
