Zoë Kravitz discusses the choice to modify the title of her directorial debut.
Kravitz’s thriller, originally titled Pussy Island, will be released in cinemas on August 23 under the title Blink Twice. The cast features her fiancé Channing Tatum, as well as Naomi Ackie, Alia Shawkat, Adria Arjona, and others.
Kravitz, 35, told Entertainment Weekly of the name change: “It was made very clear to me that ‘p—y’ is a word that we, our society, are not ready to embrace yet.”
“There were a lot of roadblocks along the way, whether it be the MPAA not wanting to put it on a poster, or a billboard, or a kiosk; movie theaters not wanting to put it on a ticket,” said she.
Furthermore, Kravitz informed the newspaper that the prior title seemed to prevent women from seeing the picture.
“Interestingly enough,” she informed me, “after researching it, women were offended by the word, and women seeing the title were saying, ‘I don’t want to see that movie,’ which is part of the reason I wanted to try and use the word, which is trying to reclaim the word, and not make it something that we’re so uncomfortable using.”
Kravitz said, “But we aren’t there yet. And as a filmmaker, I believe it is my obligation to listen to it. I care about how people feel after viewing the film.
The Batman actress also co-wrote the film, which follows a millionaire, portrayed by Tatum, who invites guests to a mystery private island, including a Los Angeles cocktail waitress played by Ackie.
In August 2022, Kravitz said that she had no plans to change the controversial title. She said to WSJ. Magazine at the time: “The title comes from that world. The title is the beginning of the narrative. It depicts the period when it was appropriate for a group of men to refer to a location as such, as well as the illusion that we have moved away from that era.
