Western Digital’s Strong Quarter Meets a Tougher Yardstick on Valuation

Western Digital posted a 2.7% decline on Friday, caught in a broader pullback across AI-linked equities as investors fretted over the sustainability of AI infrastructure spending. Yet the day’s move says less about the business than about how the market now treats good news: strong results no longer earn an automatic re-rating.

That distinction matters. Skepticism about future returns is fair game. Equating it with present operational weakness is not.

The numbers behind the noise

The company reported fiscal first-quarter 2027 revenue of $4.381 billion on Thursday, up 55% year over year — a substantial proof of growth rather than a bet on demand that has yet to materialize. Adjusted diluted earnings per share came in at $4.64.

Guidance for the current quarter points to $5.80 per share, with a band of $0.20 on either side, while second-quarter fiscal 2027 revenue is projected at $5.1 billion, plus or minus $100 million. A forecast is not a guaranteed result, but it does offer a concrete benchmark — and it undercuts the thesis that Western Digital is already signaling an imminent earnings slowdown. Anyone bearish on the stock needs a sharper argument than a vague nod to fading AI enthusiasm.

Two targets, two readings

Friday’s analyst moves laid bare the tension. Morgan Stanley raised its price target to $668 from $643 and kept an Overweight rating, citing robust demand. That is the optimistic reading: demand remains the decisive argument for the valuation.

TD Cowen cut its target to $430 from $540 but stuck with its Buy rating. Analyst Krish Sankar pointed to higher capital expenditures along with investor debate over hard-drive valuation multiples and additional supply. UBS, for its part, lowered its target to $435 from $470 and stayed at Neutral, flagging rising investment spending and an expected acceleration in supply.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Western Digital?

The takeaway is not a uniform verdict against Western Digital but a stricter standard of appraisal. A company can grow operationally and still face legitimate doubts about how its shares are priced. More supply can pressure valuations just as surely as softer demand — a distinction investors would do well to keep in mind.

What the split actually tells you

Other analysts also moved in different directions on Friday, with several trimming targets while at least one raised its own. Those divergent adjustments underscore that no single conclusion follows from the same earnings report.

For Western Digital, the broader AI debate has become concrete: is strong demand enough when capital needs, costs and the durability of the data-center business all come under closer scrutiny? According to media reports, exactly these themes formed the backdrop to the post-earnings reversal — though they are no reliable explanation for every individual sell order.

The bottom line is sober. The quarterly report delivered positive business signals but did not settle the valuation questions. The conflicting target changes capture that tension more clearly than the daily loss. The real test for investors is whether strong demand and the capital required to sustain it together justify the current price — not whether a good report sparks an immediate rally.
