Voestalpine’s Green Steel Gamble Hinges on Grid Access as Rail Orders Shore Up Earnings

The steelmaker’s multibillion-euro decarbonisation push is making visible progress, but the share price tells a different story. Voestalpine closed Friday at €41.54, down 2.3 percent on the day and roughly 15 percent below its February peak of €49.10. The relative strength index has plunged to 15.9, a level chartists consider deeply oversold. Yet over the past twelve months the stock has still nearly doubled in value.

What explains the disconnect? The market is weighing a complex set of forces: a costly green transition, US tariff headwinds, a looming EU trade shield, and a half-billion euro injection of rail business that provides a rare pocket of stability.

Steelmaking’s Electric Future Hits a Power Wall

The €1.5 billion “greentec steel” programme is taking physical shape. In April, the shell of the new electric arc furnace hall in Linz was completed, marking a tangible milestone. The first furnace is scheduled to start operations in early 2027, with a second unit to follow in Donawitz. Together they are designed to cut CO₂ emissions by roughly 30 percent by 2029 — around four million tonnes annually — and produce about 2.5 million tonnes of low-carbon steel each year.

But management has publicly flagged a structural bottleneck: electricity and hydrogen networks with sufficient capacity at competitive prices are not yet in place. Without that infrastructure, the entire transformation is at risk.

Trade Winds Shift on Both Sides of the Atlantic

On the earnings front, US import tariffs on specialty tubes are taking a bite, estimated at €60 million to €80 million. Local production capacity in North America cushions part of the blow.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Voestalpine?

The European picture is more favourable. Since January, the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism has been fully in force, adding €40 to €70 per tonne to steel imports from China and Turkey. Tougher import quotas kick in this July, with punitive duties of up to 50 percent on volumes above duty-free allowances. For low-carbon producers like Voestalpine, that is a structural advantage.

Railway Orders Provide a Steadying Hand

The Railway Systems division has emerged as a reliable earnings anchor. Voestalpine has secured contracts from Deutsche Bahn and Swiss Federal Railways worth around €500 million in total. In Germany, the company is supplying components for major infrastructure projects including the redevelopment of Frankfurt’s main station and the modernisation of the Hamburg–Berlin corridor. In Switzerland, a 20-year framework agreement focuses on digital axle-counting systems that improve safety by detecting occupied track sections, alongside cybersecurity solutions.

Innovation Meets Regulation in Wire Technology

Separately, Voestalpine Wire Technology unveiled a new coating called phreeco® at the wire & Tube trade fair in Düsseldorf. The wax-based formulation eliminates phosphates, heavy metals and PFAS, sidestepping the hazardous residues generated by conventional zinc-phosphate systems. With Brussels tightening chemical regulations, the company is betting that technical specialisation will strengthen its pricing power.

Balance Sheet Holds Up Under Investment Strain

Despite heavy capital spending, net financial debt fell to €1.4 billion over the first three quarters, a decline of more than a quarter. The gearing ratio improved to just under 19 percent. Management recently upsized a convertible bond by €35 million. The EBITDA target for the full year remains at €1.4 billion to €1.55 billion, with nine-month EBITDA running at roughly €1 billion — up about seven percent year-on-year.

The full annual report for 2025/26 is due on 3 June, followed by the annual general meeting on 1 July, where the dividend policy — a base payout of €0.40 per share and a distribution ratio of 30 percent of net profit — will be up for discussion.
