Strategy’s Dual Engine: Fresh Bitcoin Purchases, Buybacks and an Looming Index Verdict

Strategy shares climbed 7.7% on Monday, riding a broader recovery in crypto-linked equities as Bitcoin pushed back above $82,000 and technology stocks advanced alongside it. The move came without any fresh corporate announcement behind it — a reminder that the stock’s daily swings often track the sector’s mood rather than the company’s own news flow.

That distinction matters, because Strategy’s balance sheet is now inseparable from the cryptocurrency itself. Filings published Monday show the company held 848,517 Bitcoin as of Sunday, a stash large enough that any rebound in the token feeds directly into how investors value the equity.

New coins, new shares

The same regulatory disclosure laid out how the pile keeps growing. Between October 12 and 18, Strategy picked up 267 BTC for roughly $22.1 million. Funding came from the sale of 140,872 Class A shares, which generated net proceeds of $22.0 million earmarked for Bitcoin purchases.

Read together, those two lines describe a single transaction rather than separate events: the company is converting equity into cryptocurrency, and looking only at the added coins would tell half the story. What the filing does not do is explain Monday’s rally — there is no evidence tying the gain to the disclosure itself.

Buybacks run in parallel

Capital allocation extends beyond accumulating Bitcoin. Strategy also reported repurchasing 1,938,780 STRC preferred shares for $193.1 million. The company holds a total authorization of $3.0 billion for buying back digital credit instruments, of which $1.16 billion remained available as of Sunday — an authorization, not a spending commitment, and one that should not be confused with buybacks already completed.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Strategy Inc?

A raised target, and a rulebook risk

On Friday, Cantor Fitzgerald’s Ramsey El-Assal reaffirmed an Overweight rating on Strategy and lifted his price target to $208 from $186. The bullish call sits alongside a separate concern: index eligibility. Reuters reported Friday that MSCI has adopted rules that could remove Strategy from its global indices. No exclusion has been reported as finalized — what counts is which companies MSCI ultimately deems affected.

Two dates to watch

The next confirmed company event is third-quarter 2026 earnings, due after the U.S. close on October 29, with a live webinar to follow. On the index question, MSCI plans to publish its final list of potentially affected companies on November 11, with the rules set to take effect after the close on November 30.

Until then, investors have two threads to keep apart: a stock lifted by a friendlier crypto and tech backdrop, and a company whose filings describe its Bitcoin holdings and capital measures. The earnings report will add the operating numbers to that picture.
