The highly anticipated adaptation of Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot, helmed by director Gary Dauberman (known for Annabelle Comes Home), is set to make its debut this October 2024 on Max, according to a preview from Vanity Fair. Initially slated for a theatrical release in September 2022 and later pushed to April 2023, the film has now bypassed cinemas for a direct-to-streaming launch.
Dauberman’s take on this classic horror movie promises a dynamic mix of thrills and chills, aiming to balance fun and fear. “You could do a very dry version of this movie, but that’s just not my personality,” Dauberman reveals. “It’s about riding the waves of excitement and fear, delivering a complete ride by the end.”
Stephen King himself has given the film his seal of approval, tweeting earlier this year, “I’ve seen the new SALEM’S LOT and it’s quite good. Old-school horror filmmaking: slow build, big payoff. Not sure why WB is holding it back; not like it’s embarrassing or anything.”
In this new adaptation, the story follows author Ben Mears, who, haunted by childhood trauma, returns to his hometown of Jerusalem’s Lot to find inspiration. Instead, he discovers the town is under siege by a bloodthirsty vampire and his devoted servant.
The 1979 adaptation of Salem’s Lot, directed by Tobe Hooper, remains a seminal work in horror, and this latest version aims to continue the legacy with a fresh take on the chilling tale, making it one of the most anticipated upcoming horror movies.
