Rigetti Computing’s Financial Results Fall Short as Revenue Declines

While quantum computing is widely viewed as a foundational future technology, Rigetti Computing’s latest financial report underscores the sector’s present-day economic challenges. The company’s fourth-quarter figures, headlined by a significant revenue miss, have tempered market enthusiasm despite announced progress on the technical front.

Revenue Miss and Annual Performance

For the recently concluded quarter, Rigetti posted revenue of approximately $1.9 million. This result fell substantially short of the $2.32 million consensus estimate among analysts and also represented a decline of nearly 18% compared to the same period last year. The revenue weakness is seen as the primary catalyst for the negative market reaction, with the company’s shares last trading at €14.60.

Although the loss per share of $0.03 was slightly better than experts had projected, it did little to offset the disappointment. The company reported an operating loss of $22.6 million for the three-month period. For the full 2025 fiscal year, total revenue amounted to just $7.1 million.

Management Pins Recovery on Hardware Sales

Company leadership is directing investor attention toward 2026, forecasting a revenue resurgence driven by sales of its Novera quantum systems. Specifically, income from two on-premise systems is anticipated in the first half of the year. One system destined for a Japanese research institution is scheduled for delivery in April, with revenue recognition expected in the second quarter.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rigetti?

A more substantial order originates from India. The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) has placed an order for a 108-qubit system valued at roughly $8.4 million. Installation is planned for the second half of 2026. It is important to note, however, that this revenue will only be recorded upon successful installation and validation of the system.

Technical Milestones Amid Financial Strain

Despite the financial setback, Rigetti continues to advance its technology roadmap. A key near-term priority is the internal deployment of its “Cepheus-1-108Q” 108-qubit system, expected by the end of March 2026. The firm has also reported progress on error correction, a critical hurdle for developing commercially viable quantum computers.

Long-term ambitions remain unchanged and aggressive. Rigetti aims to deploy a system with over 150 qubits by the end of 2026, followed by a machine exceeding 1,000 qubits by the close of 2027. For shareholders, the critical question is whether the company can convert this technological timeline into consistent revenue streams in a timely manner. The planned delivery to India in late 2026 now stands as a pivotal test for this transition.
