Austrian businesses that have been easing employees’ home-office setups with tax-deductible equipment now face a rethink. The country’s double budget for 2027 and 2028 abolishes the Telearbeitspauschale (telework lump-sum allowance) and the Arbeitsplatzpauschale (workplace allowance). Starting in 2028, the corporate income tax rate for profits above one million euros rises from 23% to 24%. And between 2027 and 2029, investments claimed under the Gewinnfreibetrag (profit allowance) can only target real, tangible assets. Those changes could shift how companies budget for everything from adjustable desks to high-end chairs — just as new data underscores the urgency of ergonomic design.
The statistics come from children. The DAK Präventionsradar 2024 found that one in four schoolchildren now reports back pain every week. Follow-up research from 2026 confirms the trend is accelerating. The link is
Ergonomic furniture addresses only part of the workplace safety challenge. To fully protect employees and stay compliant, businesses need solid health and safety documentation covering risk assessments, fire safety, PPE, and more. Manufacturers are responding with tailored seating. ofinto has launched the Ergo, a task chair featuring auto-sync mechanics, lumbar support, and adjustable seat depth and height. It spans users from 1.60 to 2.00 metres, carries IGR certification, and handles up to 130 kilogrammes. Competitor Secretlab follows with the Atlas, a chair stripped of gaming aesthetics and marketed purely for productivity. Its 3D armrests, a 2:1 synchronous tilt mechanism, and seat-depth adjustment target both office employees and hybrid workers.
Peripherals are getting the same treatment. ViewSonic will ship the VG2719U-4K monitor in July 2026. This 27-inch 4K IPS display offers 150 millimetres of height adjustment and a pivot function for vertical use. Eye ProTech technology is built in to reduce strain during long hours. On the input side, specialised devices are gaining ground: trackball mice such as the Logitech MX Ergo S Advanced and the Kensington SlimBlade offer ergonomic alternatives, while mousing pads with integrated gel cushions — for instance from Tecknet — ease wrist pressure.
Accessibility is also becoming a baseline requirement. Werkstation has published the updated BIMK 4712:2026 standard for kiosk terminals and information pillars. It provides measurable requirements for digital interfaces and supports compliance with Germany’s Barrierefreiheitsstärkungsgesetz (BFSG), the Accessibility Strengthening Act. In building automation, dormakaba introduced EasyAssist, an app-controlled door operator that runs on low-energy drive and can be retrofitted onto existing doors to make interior spaces barrier-free.
The convergence of rising back pain among young people, a wave of new ergonomic products, and tighter Austrian tax rules on remote-work incentives means companies that invest now in healthy workplaces need to keep a close eye on the evolving fiscal landscape.
