Ocugen: Insider Buying Signals Confidence as Short Sellers Circle and Pipeline Nears Critical Data

While most eyes are on the chasm between a $9.50 analyst price target and the €1.27 trading reality, a quieter signal emerged from Ocugen’s internal ranks this summer. Insiders scooped up $25,830 worth of shares in the three months through July — a modest sum, but one that contrasts sharply with the nearly 27% of the free float held by short sellers. That positioning has set the stage for violent moves either way once the next clinical milestone lands.

The stock’s recent history captures the tension. Over the past month, Ocugen surged nearly 23%, yet the last seven days alone erased roughly 5% of those gains. At €1.27, the shares sit just below the 200-day moving average of €1.32 and above the 50-day average of €1.21, placing them in a technical no-man’s land. The 14-day relative strength index of 52.5 reflects a market that has yet to pick a direction.

Betting against the company has been costly over a longer horizon: the stock is up around 30% in the past twelve months, even as it remains nearly 46% below the 52-week high of €2.35 reached back in March. The annualized 30-day volatility of roughly 68% underscores just how binary the path ahead looks.

Pipeline Focus Shifts Between Two Lead Candidates

Ocugen’s most advanced asset is OCU400, a modifier gene therapy now in a Phase 3 trial for retinitis pigmentosa. The company is preparing for regulatory submissions based on data from that study. Alongside it sits OCU410, which targets geographic atrophy — a leading cause of blindness with no approved one-size-fits-all treatment. Positive Phase 2 data for OCU410 was released early in 2026 and continues to underpin the “Moderate Buy” consensus from analysts.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Ocugen?

Further down the pipeline, OCU410ST is being developed for Stargardt disease. All three programs rely on an AAV5-based platform that delivers a regulator gene directly into the retina, aiming to restore cellular balance across a broad patient population rather than targeting a single rare mutation. That strategy is meant to sidestep the ultra-high pricing that plagues most niche gene therapies.

The company has been actively pitching its vision, presenting at the Biotechnology International Congress and Noble Capital Markets’ Emerging Growth Virtual Equity Conference. The global market for nucleic-acid-based gene therapies is projected to reach $1.44 billion by 2030, driven by CRISPR and personalized rare-disease treatments — a space where Ocugen’s €444 million market cap leaves room for both upside and vulnerability.

Earnings Beat Comes With a Familiar Caveat

Ocugen’s first fiscal quarter of 2026 delivered a surprise on the top line, with revenue of $1.53 million handily beating the $0.42 million analysts had expected. The earnings picture was less flattering: a per-share loss of $0.06, slightly worse than the $0.05 consensus. The pattern is typical for a clinical-stage biotech — topline growth arrives faster than anticipated, but operating losses remain entrenched as R&D spending accelerates.

The combination of a hefty short position and an upcoming binary catalyst — Phase 3 data for OCU400, plus the continued readouts for OCU410 — means that any unexpected positive news could trigger a rapid squeeze. Conversely, a failure in the pivotal trial would almost certainly send the stock back toward its lows. For now, Ocugen remains a high-stakes wager on a gen-agnostic approach that aims to treat the many, not just the few.
