NextEra Energy has secured binding agreements for three federal-level energy hub projects totaling roughly 16.5 gigawatts, backing the buildout with an initial financing package of $5.7 billion raised since the start of the year, the company said Wednesday.
The announcement came alongside third-quarter 2026 results showing adjusted earnings of $1.24 per share, up from $1.13 in the same period a year earlier. Management reaffirmed full-year adjusted earnings guidance of $3.92 to $4.02 per share and said it is aiming for the top end of that range.
Project Pipeline Swells
NextEra Energy Resources added 3.7 gigawatts of new renewable and storage projects to its backlog during the quarter, bringing the total to about 36.7 gigawatts. The unit also raised cash by selling minority stakes in renewable generation and battery storage companies to outside investors, generating $1,559 million in proceeds during September, according to the quarterly filing submitted Wednesday.
Shareholders, meanwhile, will receive a regular quarterly dividend of $0.6232 per common share, payable December 15 to holders of record as of November 27.
Two Brokers, Two Lower Targets
Analysts moved in opposite directions on valuation but agreed on the direction of their price targets. BMO Capital Markets cut its target to $88 from $93 on Tuesday while keeping an “Outperform” rating, with analyst James M. Thalacker pointing to valuation as the reason. He also said he expected management to address how it plans to underpin growth prospects and interest-rate hedges, and predicted the proposed merger with Dominion Energy would stay at the center of investor attention.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying NextEra Energy?
Barclays followed on Friday, lowering its target to $79 from $84 and maintaining an “Equal Weight” rating — a change to the number but not to its overall view of the stock.
Dominion Deal Faces Conditions
The merger with Dominion Energy remains the dominant regulatory storyline. On October 15, both companies filed a joint response to a Federal Energy Regulatory Commission letter seeking additional information, with comments open until November 5.
In Virginia, staff at the State Corporation Commission recommended on October 19 rejecting the combination as filed, though media reports indicated they would not oppose approval if the companies accepted added safeguards. Governor Abigail Spanberger pressed the same day for conditions of her own, reportedly calling for a six-year freeze on base electricity rates for residential customers and larger credits on customer bills.
Separately, Reuters reported on October 19 that a U.S. Bureau of Land Management auction of geothermal rights in Nevada includes overlapping parcels. NextEra Energy had asked the agency to remove, defer or redraw three of the parcels, a matter tied to the planned Sawtooth Energy Center.
