MSCI World ETF Faces Upcoming Index Methodology Revision

A significant shift in how a leading global equity index is constructed could impact one of the world’s most popular exchange-traded funds. The iShares MSCI World ETF, a benchmark for developed market stocks, is set to reflect changes to the underlying MSCI index methodology scheduled for May 2026.

Potential Impact on Fund Operations

The planned methodological adjustments by MSCI may lead to a reweighting of the index’s constituent companies. For ETFs that track this index, such as the iShares MSCI World ETF, this typically necessitates portfolio turnover. The fund manager must execute trades to align the ETF’s holdings with the revised index composition, which can result in increased buying and selling activity within the fund.

The extent to which this affects the fund’s cost efficiency or its ability to closely mirror the index—known as tracking quality—will depend on the scale of the final changes. The fund currently carries a total expense ratio of 0.24 percent annually.

Current Portfolio Composition and Performance

The ETF’s portfolio remains heavily concentrated in U.S. equities. Its largest holdings include technology giants NVIDIA, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet, Broadcom, and Meta, alongside Tesla and financial heavyweight JPMorgan Chase. This allocation results in a dominant weighting toward the technology sector, followed by financial services and industrial companies.

This focus has influenced recent performance. Since the start of the year, the ETF has declined by approximately six percent. It is trading more than six percent below its 50-day moving average, and a Relative Strength Index (RSI) reading of 20 indicates the fund is in deeply oversold territory according to that technical metric.

The upcoming index review in May 2026 is expected to clarify which companies will define the developed world equity landscape moving forward. The iShares MSCI World ETF serves as a key gauge for global market sentiment by tracking the performance of developed economies.
