Microsoft’s Cyber Takedown Meets Inflation Headwinds as PERM Suspension Adds Regulatory Noise

Microsoft’s digital crime fighters delivered a sweeping blow to cross-border fraud operations this week, dismantling infrastructure that criminals had used to run international scams. The company’s Digital Crimes Unit worked alongside industry group Health-ISAC under a court order to seize and redirect three components of illicit online marketplaces: YAM Store, CoGUI and Iron Man. More than 20,000 compromised accounts were deactivated, and over 100,000 addresses tied to fraudulent activity were blocked.

That operational win, however, did little to lift the stock. Shares of the software and cloud giant finished Wednesday’s session at EUR 478.00, down 1.5%, as hotter-than-expected U.S. inflation data revived rate worries across financial markets.

Rate Fears Put Data Center Spending Under the Microscope

For Microsoft, the inflation surprise strikes at a sensitive spot. Investors are growing uneasy about the financing costs attached to the company’s enormous data center buildout, and the latest price signals deepened skepticism toward the scale of its artificial intelligence outlays, according to Reuters.

The numbers involved are substantial. Microsoft’s in-house chip family, Azure Maia, is slated to scale to multi-gigawatt installations from 2027 onward, while the Maia 200 model is already handling workloads such as Copilot. The longer interest rates stay elevated, the more pointedly the market questions whether these mega-projects will pay off. Caution held the upper hand in recent trading.

Washington Turns Up the Heat on Immigration Program

While rate anxiety rattled investors, a separate regulatory headache emerged on the home front. On October 8, the U.S. Department of Labor suspended Microsoft from the Permanent Labor Certification Program (PERM), Reuters reported. The agency said it would neither accept new applications nor continue processing pending cases, citing ongoing federal investigations into the company.

The suspension stems from fraud allegations concerning the application process for permanent residency permits for skilled workers; general visa categories remain unaffected. The development lands as a reminder that scrutiny of tech giants’ employment and labor practices is intensifying.

Brad Smith Presses for Global AI Guardrails

Microsoft’s leadership is simultaneously pushing the debate over the societal risks of emerging technologies. On Monday, company president Brad Smith called for urgent worldwide regulation of artificial intelligence, according to Reuters. He urged the deployment of independent auditors and cautioned that highly complex AI systems currently face lower safety requirements than ordinary everyday products.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Microsoft?

The twin regulatory fronts — employment practices and AI safety — illustrate the widening demands on technology companies. Supervisors are examining personnel and labor compliance more closely, while the industry confronts the need to establish safety standards for automated systems upfront to head off costly liability exposure.

Insider Sale and New Hardware Round Out the Picture

On the executive front, CFO Amy Hood sold 7,305 common shares on Tuesday for proceeds of USD 3,984,303.

Product news continued apace. As part of updates to Windows and Surface, Microsoft unveiled the Surface Laptop Ultra, which begins shipping October 16 and carries a starting price of USD 2,599. On the software side, the developer introduced Microsoft Execution Containers, designed specifically to control AI agents.

Earnings on the Horizon, Valuation Still Rich

Attention now shifts to the next reporting date. Microsoft will release results for the first quarter of fiscal 2027 on October 28, 2026, after U.S. markets close.

Despite the recent pullback, the stock remains within striking distance of its highs. At EUR 478.00, the shares sit just 2.9% below the 52-week peak of EUR 492.40 — a level the stock touched on October 13. Whether the billions poured into data center infrastructure convert into measurable returns will likely determine how long that premium valuation holds.
