Micron’s Unprecedented Backlog: A Supply Crunch Fueling Wall Street’s Boldest Bet

A remarkable supply constraint is reshaping the investment thesis for Micron Technology. Industry checks reveal the company’s production capacity for high-margin memory chips is now fully booked through the end of 2027, extending beyond prior guidance of 2026. Negotiations for supply terms are already underway for 2028, painting a picture of extraordinary demand visibility that has caught even seasoned analysts off guard.

This clarity is the foundation for the most bullish call on Wall Street. On Friday, Lynx Equity raised its price target for Micron to $825, the highest among all covering firms. The strategists cited “extended capacity shortages” and revenue visibility that “significantly exceeds current market models.” The backlog isn’t limited to High-Bandwidth Memory (HBM) for AI; demand for DDR5 and LPDDR5 memory is also reportedly sold out through 2027.

The financial results are already reflecting this pricing power. For its fiscal second quarter of 2026, Micron posted record revenue of $23.86 billion, driven by an exceptional pricing cycle. Its gross margin soared to 75%. Management has guided for a further increase to approximately 81% in the current quarter, with revenue projected to hit $33.5 billion.

Despite this fundamental strength, analyst opinion is sharply divided, highlighting a valuation debate. KeyBanc reiterated its Overweight rating with a $600 target, forecasting DRAM and NAND prices to rise 30% to 50% quarter-over-quarter in Q2 2026. In contrast, Citigroup lowered its target from $510 to $425, though it maintained a Buy rating, pointing to a 6% price decline for standard DDR5 memory since mid-March. Erste Group downgraded the stock to Hold, citing the high investment burden on free cash flow.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Micron?

The stock’s performance has been formidable, gaining roughly 11.3% in the week of April 6-10 to close at $420.59. Year-to-date, shares are up about 34%, and they have surged nearly 475% over the past twelve months. The consensus price target among Wall Street analysts stands at $464.61, with a majority of ratings in the Buy camp.

Quantitative models inject a note of caution, with some systems flagging potential for a pullback toward targets as low as $318.89. Yet, even after its massive run, Micron trades at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of just over five, far below the industry average of 23. Lynx Equity projects revenue for fiscal 2028 will grow 40%, a stark contrast to consensus expectations for stagnation.

Corporate actions underscore management’s confidence. The board recently approved a 30% dividend increase. Shareholders of record on March 30 will receive a payment of $0.15 per share on April 15, 2026. On the product front, Micron confirmed in mid-March the start of mass production for its HBM4 chips, destined for NVIDIA’s Vera Rubin platform, a critical step in securing its AI ecosystem role.

The central question for investors is how far the current valuation is supported by these unprecedented fundamentals. The next quarterly report, due in June 2026, will be a key test, offering evidence on whether the ambitious 81% margin forecast is achieved and justifying the wide dispersion in analyst targets.
