Micron’s Record Quarter Meets a Cooler Mood in Memory Chips

Micron Technology is still posting numbers that would have looked outlandish only a short time ago. Even so, the stock has been caught in a broader rethink across the memory-chip sector, where investors are weighing record AI-linked demand against competition, legal costs and the risk that the boom has already been priced in.

The shares moved lower in the latest session as the whole segment came under pressure. One report put the decline at 3.6 percent to 820.50 euro, while another said the stock fell 2.5 percent to 830.00 euro. In both cases, the backdrop was the same: a broad sell-off in memory-chip names rather than a company-specific setback. Reuters said worries were being fuelled by progress at Chinese rivals, doubts over the profitability of massive artificial-intelligence spending and wider macro concerns about persistent interest-rate pressure.

That market chill stands in sharp contrast to Micron’s operating performance. On 30 September, the company reported results for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026, with revenue of $54.23 billion and a GAAP net profit of $37.70 billion. Adjusted diluted earnings per share came in at $33.42. For the full 2026 fiscal year, revenue totalled $133.19 billion.

Management paired those figures with an ambitious outlook. For the first quarter of fiscal 2027, Micron guided to revenue of $61.5 billion, plus or minus $1.5 billion.

The company has also been active on shareholder returns. Micron declared a quarterly dividend of $0.15 per share, payable on 29 October. It also increased its authorised buyback programme to $35.16 billion. Those repurchases are permitted from 9 December 2026 and remain tied to conditions under its direct-funding agreement linked to the US CHIPS Act, according to the company’s annual Form 10-K.

At the same time, Micron has been drawing a line under one expensive legal dispute. On 6 October, it reached a settlement with Netlist under which it will pay $600 million for a five-year patent licence to resolve the pending litigation between the two companies. The amount is to be paid in quarterly instalments of $30 million, beginning in the fourth quarter of 2026 and running through the third quarter of 2031.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Micron Technology?

Competition from China is another issue shaping the narrative around the stock. Market reports cited concern about CXMT’s DRAM advances, including a denser 4F²-DRAM architecture and plans to introduce server memory products by year-end. That has added to investor unease about how durable Micron’s lead in the sector will prove if new rivals gain traction.

Even after the pullback, the shares remain far ahead for the year. One source said Micron is up 225 percent since the start of the year. Another noted that the stock still sits well below its 52-week high of 1,103.80 euro.

Analysts have not rushed to turn cautious. Rosenblatt Securities reiterated a “Buy” rating on Tuesday and kept its $1,900 price target in place.

Micron’s latest trading move, then, says less about its own results than about the market’s changing mood. The company remains a record earner. Investors, however, are now asking how much of the future growth story is already embedded in the price.
