During the Los Angeles premiere of his Western epic Horizon: An American Saga—Chapter 1 at the Regency Village Theatre on Monday, June 24, the Oscar winner was accompanied by five of his seven children.
On the red carpet, Costner—who is 69 years old—posed for photographs with his children, Annie (40), Joe (36), Cayden (17), Grace (14) and Hayes (15), who is in the film. The actor’s son Liam, 27, and daughter Lily, 37, skipped the party.
After decades of considering making the picture a reality, Costner—who directed, co-wrote, and acted in the multi-part Horizon—says he was fully immersed in the experience.
“For a studio distributor Warner Bros. to line up behind it to create this environment for us, to celebrate this movie we worked so hard for and one I’ve dreamed about so long, it’s pretty gratifying to understand my children are somewhere watching over me, which they always do — you can imagine that feeling,” he explains.
Costner said his kids watched Horizon with him at the Cannes Film Festival in May.
“I brought them with me to France, but they’re anxious to see it with no subtitles,” he jokes.
With his ex-wife Cindy Silva, Costner has three children: Annie, Lily, and Joe. With his ex-partner Bridget Rooney, he has a son named Liam.
The star of Wyatt Earp wed designer Christine Baumgartner in September 2004; the couple has three children together: Cayden, Hayes, and Grace.
Before Monday night’s screening, Costner gave a statement in which he recalled the “true journey” of making Horizon a reality and thanked everyone who had a hand in the production, mentioning the actors in particular, who “breathed life into this story that started to bubble up in 1988.”
“My heart feels really big tonight,” stated the man. The movies show me the kind of person I want to be and the kind of person I want to be in certain situations. To me, they have always represented that kind of person. Onscreen, I have my pick of actors and actresses. Plus, this Western will test you to your limits, making your ideal self and ideal enemy very clear. Oh, and let us not forget the ingenuity that was required to make it westward. There it is.
“You are the one who gets to decide if I was tough enough,” Costner went on to say. You may have made it out alive, but it was all down to luck. This journey from one shore to another is something I’ve attempted to film. Then go on this journey westward.
Horizon: A Story of America Chapter 2 will be released on August 16th, after Chapter 1 hits cinemas on June 28th.
