IREN Wins a Buy Rating Just as Microsoft’s Design Changes Push Its Revenue Target Back

Jones Trading upgraded IREN to Buy from Hold on Friday with a $40 price target, a call that landed one day after the company’s fiscal first-quarter results and a 21% jump in the share price. Analyst Kevin Dede carries the new rating, according to media reports. The timing is instructive: investors are being asked to weigh a business visibly remaking itself against a buildout schedule that has already slipped.

Cloud revenue now dwarfs mining

The quarter, presented Thursday, showed total revenue of $228 million, up 66% from the prior quarter. AI Cloud revenue reached $200 million, a 182% sequential increase, at an 86% gross margin. Bitcoin mining contributed $28 million over the same period — a fraction of the total, and a reminder of how quickly the revenue mix has shifted.

Contractually secured revenue climbed 22% quarter-over-quarter to $20.3 billion. Roughly two-thirds of that backlog sits with counterparties rated investment grade, a customer profile that could ease the financing of further expansion — provided IREN delivers the agreed capacity on schedule and converts contracts into recurring cash.

Morningstar points to the Horizon 1 launch for Microsoft as the moment the cloud unit gained real scale, and notes that IREN has also expanded agreements with a leading AI lab. Those deals broaden the base, so long as they translate into dependable capacity drawdowns.

The bill comes due before the revenue does

Against that demand stands a hefty capital program. IREN plans about $15 billion in capital expenditure for the remainder of fiscal 2027. Roughly $9 billion is covered by cash and committed financing; another $6 billion depends on additional fundraising and market conditions. That gap ties the growth story directly to risk. Capital raised on workable terms keeps the buildout moving; costlier or scarcer funding could squeeze the company even with contracts in hand.

Customer prepayments offer some relief. Under new contracts, one client is expected to pre-fund around 90% of GPU investments — an arrangement that can cap IREN’s own capital needs if the timing of those payments lines up with construction.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying IREN?

The earnings picture leaves limited room for slippage. Despite the stronger cloud business, the latest quarter produced a net loss of $263 million and adjusted EBITDA of $66 million.

A target date that keeps moving

IREN now expects its goal of more than $4 billion in annualized recurring revenue in January 2027, having pushed it back from December 31, 2026, with a possible further delay to the end of February 2027. Management cited a customer-requested design change and the timing of equipment deliveries; Microsoft’s requested network design changes held up some infrastructure shipments, according to the company. IREN said no contractual penalty applies.

The economics still matter. When spending lands before customer payments, the bridging requirement grows, and with it the reliance on available financing. The ARR figure itself is an operating projection — what counts for investors is when the underlying capacity actually bills and collects.

What the calendar tests

Management aims to complete the shift away from Bitcoin mining largely by December 31, 2026, with a small mining operation possibly persisting into the following year. That makes the turn of the year the first checkpoint; the January ARR ramp is the second. In the favorable case, customers underwrite demand and part of the hardware bill, finished capacity generates revenue, and that revenue smooths the next financing step. The mining exit would then read as the byproduct of a workable transition rather than a retreat — contingent, as ever, on construction, delivery and cash flow arriving in the right order.
