IBM’s Quantum Footprint Widens as Evercore Reiterates Bullish Stance

IBM’s quantum ambitions took a concrete step forward this week, with the company joining the University of Chicago, the State of Illinois and the Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park to unveil an operational quantum computer. The IBM Quantum System Two, which runs on IBM’s Nighthawk processor, is now up and running at the Hyde Park Labs in Chicago and will serve as the anchor of the National Quantum Algorithm Center. According to the company, it is IBM’s first quantum computer in Illinois. The system will eventually relocate to the Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park once construction there is complete, linking today’s live operations with the planned build-out in the quantum park.

The Chicago deployment was not the only quantum development on IBM’s calendar. On Thursday, IBM, Oak Ridge National Laboratory and AMD presented a platform for joint work on quantum error correction. IBM said the initiative ties quantum and high-performance computing together and supports the U.S. Department of Energy’s Quantum Genesis Mission. Rather than treating quantum machines and high-performance computers as separate tracks, the three partners are folding them into a single development approach centered on error correction.

Evercore Backs the Story

Analysts were not silent on the stock. Evercore ISI reportedly reaffirmed its “Outperform” rating and a price target of $275.00, with the research house grounding its view in a sum-of-the-parts assessment of IBM’s businesses. The stock slipped 0.1% on Friday, closing at €220.00 — a marginally weaker end to the week.

Beyond quantum, IBM’s software and partnership engine kept humming. Confluent, which belongs to IBM, announced new capabilities for its Streamhouse architecture, designed to keep business context current for AI agents, applications and analytics. Roughly two weeks ago, IBM also rolled out identity and control features for AI agents, including Agent Identity and an integration with HashiCorp Vault.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying IBM?

On the cloud side, IBM reported general availability of Agent Identity in watsonx Orchestrate and of the IBM Cloud Migration Hub. It also introduced IBM Cloud Secrets Manager Vault Dedicated, built on HashiCorp Vault Enterprise.

Tennis and Traffic

IBM’s partnership with the United States Tennis Association also got a fresh term. The two extended their agreement on October 28 by five years, keeping IBM as the official AI and cloud partner of the US Open through 2031. The company offered a sense of scale for its digital platforms: during the 2026 tournament, the website and app together recorded more than 270 million interactions, a figure covering both platforms combined.
