How the Duffer Brothers Figured Out the Final Shot of ‘Stranger Things’ Season 4 Volumes 2

The Duffer brothers, Matt and Ross, came up with that last shot by drawing ideas from “Star Wars” and “The Lord of the Rings.”

Final Shot of ‘Stranger Things’ Season 4 Volumes 2 figured Out and explained by Duffer Brothers. After the release of Volume 1 at the end of May, Season 4 Volume 2 of Stranger Things has finally become available on Netflix. This comes after a month-long wait following the release of Volume 1.

The second-to-last season of the epic science fiction show was packed with moments of victory and defeat that took place across the entire world, and it culminated with the return of all of our heroes to Hawkins for the first time in quite some time. The primary source of tension in Season 4 is between Eleven, played by Millie Bobby Brown, and Vecna/Henry/One, who serves as both her narrative antagonist and her special child predecessor (Jamie Campbell Bower).

It’s a classic case of an unstoppable force coming up against an immovable object, with Vecna determined to do anything to destroy the planet and Eleven prepared to do whatever it takes to protect her friends. Vecna’s goal is to destroy the world, and Eleven’s goal is to protect her friends.

In volume 2, it was revealed that Vecna’s ultimate objective was to murder four victims, open his four gates of the apocalypse, and let lose the whole terror of the Upside Down on Hawkins. After Hopper and the Byers family have returned to their hometown and reunited with Eleven, our protagonists are drawn to a storm that is raining the rotting spores of the Upside Down upon the land. This occurs after Hopper and the Byers family have reunited with Eleven.

The creators of Stranger Things, Matt and Ross Duffer, recently discussed the episode’s climactic moment in an interview with Steve Weintraub, who works for Collider. According to the explanation provided by Matt Duffer, that shot “came pretty early.” He continued his remarks by noting, “We were all aware that we wanted the episode to wrap up with spores dropping in Hawkins. I don’t remember exactly how early on in the process that was, but it must have been quite early on. And that was what we desired.”

Matt Duffer highlighted which sci-fi and fantasy properties, particular, the duo drew upon for the final shot, in particular, saying that the pair was heavily inspired by sci-fi and fantasy mainstays of their own childhoods as well as of the 1980s. He said:

“We were very much inspired by Empire Strikes Back, that ending where they’re looking out the window. We knew we wanted to end on the backs of our characters as they’re looking out towards this dark supernatural plume that was spitting out these spores all over their town as they’re facing this evil, that has not retreated but very much coming in an aggressive way into their town. We wanted to hand at the notion of war, and a supernatural war coming to Hawkins.”

Also receiving great acclaim from Duffer was the show’s concept artist, with whom they have been collaborating on the show since Season 2. “Michael Mar…he was the one who designed it. Simply put, we were quite excited to shoot it, and now we can finally see it. In all honesty, it wasn’t until about a week and a half ago or something along those lines that we saw the final visual effects come together.”

The conclusion of each of the first three seasons of the Netflix series Stranger Things saw the heroes of Hawkins returning to their lives feeling reasonably unscathed and content after prevailing over the series’ annual climactic villain. However, Season 4 is distinct from the seasons that came before it in a variety of ways. According to Ross Duffer, “the goal of this one” is significantly different from the objectives of previous seasons. It is something we haven’t done for previous seasons, but the goal for Season 4 was to create “that sense of anticipation where you’ve built up what the stakes are.”

Continuing from where his brother left off when he mentioned getting ideas from the climax of Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, he said. In a further explanation, Ross Duffer stated:

“So we’ve set the stakes and it’s just, the feeling you always want to try to get is that Empire Strikes Back feeling of, “oh my God, I’m so excited to see what happens next.” Or Fellowship of the Ring as they’re just headed off towards Mordor. That’s the dream, that’s the hope. That’s the feeling you want.”

Ross Duffer followed his explanation by saying that we are going to leave our characters on a cliffhanger that they are completely aware of, “something they just haven’t been able to do before.” He proceeded by noting, “usually speaking, we really close up the tales, and then we go, yeah, but there’s some horror lurking beneath the surface that the audience sees that our characters don’t necessarily see.”

For the penultimate season, Eleven and the rest of her adventuring party are well aware of the dangers they’re facing. Duffer went on, “In this case, our characters truly see the horror.” Posing some big questions ahead of Season 5 he finished, saying “It’s like, what are they going to do? How are they going to deal with this? What is their journey going to look like?”

Early in the month of August is when the Stranger Things Season 5 writers’ room is scheduled to begin their work on the upcoming season. Seasons 1-4 of the series are presently available to stream on Netflix.
