D-Wave Quantum Sinks 4.6% as IonQ’s Billion-Dollar Deal Rattles the Sector

A billion-dollar acquisition by a rival is rippling through quantum computing stocks, and D-Wave Quantum is feeling the brunt of it. Shares of the quantum specialist fell 4.6% on Monday to EUR 12.39, dragged down by sector-wide selling after IonQ agreed to buy Elisity in an all-stock transaction valued at up to $1.3 billion.

The deal, reported across media outlets, has revived an old worry among investors: dilution. Market participants fear the transaction signals a fresh wave of share issuance across the industry, and that concern has refocused attention on the sector’s relentless capital needs.

A Rough Year Gets Rougher

The pullback fits into a broader pattern of volatility for specialized technology names. D-Wave is hardly alone in its struggles, but its decline has outpaced many peers — the stock is down 45% since the start of the year.

Monday’s selloff illustrates just how sensitive these valuations have become to financing questions. Beyond dilution fears, rising US Treasury yields have been squeezing speculative growth segments, as higher borrowing costs weigh on the discounted cash flow models that underpin future valuations.

Adding to the pressure, the law firm Kessler Topaz Meltzer & Check flagged an ongoing investigation into potential securities violations on Monday. While the move doesn’t represent a new operational development, it reminds market participants of earlier trouble spots. The probe centers on the company’s August financial results and the resignation of its finance chief at the time.

Partnerships and Beta Tests Continue

Away from the market turmoil, D-Wave is working to widen its technological footprint and open up new applications. A beta test is underway for its Gate-Model Simulator program, giving select customers early access. The goal is to gather experience with error-aware programming and test initial applications ahead of general availability.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying D-Wave Quantum?

Institutional partnerships remain a key plank of the strategy. The company has struck a collaboration with Florida Atlantic University for a regional quantum cybersecurity program, for which the university received a $200,000 grant from the National Institute of Standards and Technology, part of the US Department of Commerce. D-Wave is providing access to its own technology, with an Advantage2 system slated for installation on the Boca Raton campus.

A separate partnership with the University of Arkansas, announced roughly a week ago, established a support fund focused on education and applications in supply chains, logistics, transport, and national defense. Since that announcement, the stock has shed 6.3%.

The beta program has drawn participants including the Jülich Supercomputing Centre, Spanish banking giant BBVA, FirstQFM, and Florida Atlantic University.

Fundamentals Still Weigh on Sentiment

Despite the scientific progress, caution dominates. Media reports point to weaker-than-expected results for the second quarter of 2026 and persistent cash burn as drags on the valuation. Analysts, too, are holding back — one research house rated the stock a hold on Thursday, according to media reports. The shares remain 68% below their 52-week high.

In pre-market trading, the stock was quoted at EUR 13.06, with the year-to-date loss at 42%. Whether the academic collaborations can eventually translate into viable commercial revenue is a question the coming quarterly reports may begin to answer.
