D-Wave Quantum is discovering that hardware milestones and market sentiment can travel in opposite directions. Within a single week, the quantum-computing specialist announced its first annealing system bound for Italy, extended a long-running manufacturing partnership, and still watched its shares slide 8.2% to close at EUR 10.49 on Friday.
The retreat came against a sour tape for growth names. According to the Associated Press, the overwhelming majority of technology stocks in the S&P 500 finished Friday in the red, dragged down by losses in semiconductors and mounting doubts about the pace of sector growth. When sentiment turns on Wall Street, speculative future-facing names are usually the first to wobble.
Foundry Continuity and a Flagship for Como
Operationally, the company has kept busy. On Tuesday it agreed a multi-year extension of its manufacturing cooperation with SkyWater Technology, under which the superconducting quantum processors underpinning D-Wave’s technology roadmap will continue to be built at the partner’s plant in the US state of Minnesota. The arrangement secures critical industrial capacity for the company’s hardware.
Two days later came the delivery headline: an Advantage2 system with more than 4,400 qubits, the first annealing quantum computer shipped to Italy, destined for installation in Como in Lombardy. Swiss Quantum Technology SA is financing the project through a EUR 10 million agreement; as part of the deal the partner has secured half of the system’s capacity for five years and holds a purchase option. Researchers, universities and local businesses are expected to get access to the machine.
For a technology that many market observers still classify as purely experimental, a commercial installation on European soil carries real weight. D-Wave is putting actual systems in place and binding manufacturing partners to it for the long haul — clear signals of continuity from an operational standpoint.
A Legal Cloud Gathers
The mood on Friday owed little to any of that. On Thursday an investor filed a proposed securities class action in the US District Court for the Northern District of California, alleging that the company and two executives overstated its business and financial prospects. Law firms including Bronstein, Gewirtz & Grossman and Holzer & Holzer have also brought suits.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying D-Wave Quantum?
On Friday, the firm Gainey McKenna & Egleston flagged that a class action had been lodged and named 14 December 2026 as the deadline for motions to appoint a lead plaintiff. The claims remain unproven, no class has been certified by the court, and no liability has been established. Even so, such disputes breed uncertainty, and market participants tend to price legal risk bluntly and painfully.
Sector Scars and Structural Warnings
Broader forces compounded the pressure. Costly acquisition plans at rival IonQ have stoked sector-wide fears of share dilution. Meanwhile, media reports said the research firm Gartner has warned that a large share of quantum start-ups could fail in the coming years — a forecast that makes every piece of progress subject to double scrutiny.
That leaves D-Wave caught in a familiar bind for young technology companies. After Friday’s slide, the stock sits just above its 52-week low of EUR 10.13, a gap of only 3.6%. The era of unconditional advance praise is over; investors now want hard evidence that the technology can make the leap from the laboratory into everyday commercial use.
Can a specialised approach such as quantum annealing become profitable quickly enough to hold the market’s confidence? That is the fault line the company is walking. Engineers keep building hardware while the capital market keeps a cold eye on costs. Until predictable revenue arrives, D-Wave will remain at the mercy of the broader appetite for risk — and, for now, of the noise coming from the courtroom.
