D-Wave Quantum: Physics Milestone and CHIPS Act Opportunity Arrive as the Stock Tests a Key Trendline

D-Wave Quantum finds itself at a juncture where scientific credibility and market anxiety pull in opposite directions. Researchers have successfully run a hybrid algorithm on the company’s hardware to solve complex eigenvalue problems using the Equation of Motion Phonon Method — calculations that routinely stump classical computers. The breakthrough, which advances the study of atomic nuclei and neutron stars, has injected a dose of tangible validation into a stock that has been battered by extreme volatility and a steep seven-day sell-off.

The shares initially slid nearly 20% in a week, hitting €21.07 on a Tuesday session that marked a 5.60% decline from the prior day. That left the stock hovering just 1.4% above its 200-day moving average of €20.79 — a line many traders treat as the dividing line between an intact uptrend and a structural breakdown. However, the following session brought a sharp reversal: the stock bounced 1.70% to €22.70, crossing back above its 20-day moving average in a move that short-term participants often interpret as an early trend-change signal.

The 200-day MA, now at €20.80, remains the critical technical anchor. A sustained break below it could invite further selling pressure and confirm a trend reversal to the downside. Should the level hold, it may provide a base for a recovery attempt. The 50-day average at €18.23 sits well below the current price, indicating that while the recent pullback is severe, the medium-term structure has not been fully dismantled. The 14-day Relative Strength Index stands at 49.4 — squarely neutral territory — leaving room for moves in either direction without immediate overbought or oversold conditions.

Volatility remains extreme. The 30-day annualised figure is running near 140%, a level that underscores the speculative nature of the quantum computing sector. From the 52-week high of €38.48 reached in October 2025, the stock has shed more than 45%. Yet measured from the March 2026 low of €11.12, it still commands a gain of roughly 89% — a fractured picture that reflects the sector’s wild oscillations.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying D-Wave Quantum?

Analysts are leaning cautiously optimistic. B. Riley recently lifted its price target to around €37, implying upside of more than 60% from the current level. The consensus target across the coverage universe stands at €31.49, representing a potential gain of approximately 49%. Whether those projections hold will depend heavily on the stock’s ability to defend the 200-day line in the coming sessions.

The company also disclosed an insider share sale on the same day as the technical drop. Director John Dilullo sold 7,850 shares, a move that coincided with a roadmap presentation on fault-tolerant quantum computing delivered on June 5. Meanwhile, the competitive landscape is shifting. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has just cleared a merger between rival IQM Finland and a special-purpose acquisition company, adding momentum to sector consolidation. Separately, D-Wave is among the companies eligible for up to $100 million in support from the U.S. CHIPS Act, a potential government lifeline that could fund further hardware development.

All eyes now turn to London. On June 18, D-Wave’s management is scheduled to present at Qubits Europe 2026, where it will showcase additional commercial use cases. The event offers a direct opportunity to convert the recent scientific momentum into tangible customer traction. For a stock caught between a nuclear physics breakthrough and a rapidly approaching technical threshold, the next few trading days will be decisive.
