For Commerzbank investors, the main question is not whether one approval arrives soon, but which approval it actually is. Bettina Orlopp, the bank’s chief executive, sees an ECB green light for UniCredit in the coming days or weeks. That would still leave other authorisations outstanding, with the rest of the regulatory process expected to run to the end of 2026 or, at the latest, early 2027.
That distinction matters. Orlopp’s comments, reported by Handelsblatt and Bloomberg, refer to a sequence of decisions rather than a single final hurdle. Reuters said the European Commission has set 16 November as the deadline for its first antitrust ruling on UniCredit’s planned takeover of Commerzbank. That date concerns one step in the process, not the completion of the entire deal.
The bank’s operational calendar is moving on a separate track. Commerzbank said on 5 November that it will publish its third-quarter 2026 results. Those figures will land before the Commission’s 16 November deadline, giving investors another checkpoint before Brussels acts.
Analysts are also updating their own models, though not their stance. RBC Capital Markets lifted its price target from 40 to 41 euros on Tuesday, while keeping the stock at “Sector Perform”. Analystin Anke Reingen confirmed the rating, with the higher target based on updated estimates for the third quarter of 2026. The closing price of 38.00 € was still below the revised target.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Commerzbank?
At the same time, the bank is continuing to buy back its own shares. On Monday, Commerzbank reported repurchases of 2,987,942 shares for the latest weekly period, bringing cumulative buybacks to 11,114,083 shares. That programme is already being executed, unlike the takeover approvals, which remain pending.
The result is a company being shaped by several calendars at once: earnings on one date, a Commission deadline on another, an expected ECB decision somewhere in between, and further approvals potentially stretching into 2027. Each piece tells a different part of the story, and none of them should be read as the final word on the others.
