Chad Price and Mako Medical: Passionate Disruptors of Health Care

Chad Price and Josh Arant began Mako Medical, an award-winning laboratory specializing in testing and diagnostics, with two goals in mind: to create an accessible, affordable competitor to two major industry competitors and to develop an organization dedicated to giving back to its community.

Mako Medical has overwhelmingly succeeded in accomplishing both of those goals. Topping Triangle Business Journal’s Fast 50 list for three years running,  Mako has emerged as a standout alternative to LabCorp and QuestDiagnostics. The company is distinguished as one of the top 500 companies nationwide and was featured on Forbes Magazine’s inaugural list of America’s Best Startup Employers. These accolades demonstrate that Mako Medical fosters a supportive work environment and is a great place to work.

There are a number of factors that have contributed to Mako Medical’s meteoric rise, but its commitment to accessible, affordable, and accurate testing has undoubtedly put it at the forefront of the laboratory and diagnostics industry. Thousands have made the switch to Mako simply because it has addressed the issues that make health care tedious, unaffordable, and inaccessible to Americans across the country. Leveraging modern cloud tools and technology, Mako has moved its services to an accessible, online platform, ensuring that patients have quick and easy access to their results.

Price and his team have also pioneered a partnership with GoKart and GoKart Kids, a transportation service similar to Uber that focuses on providing service to children and patients. This innovative partnership ensures that children and patients have the ability to safely and affordably make medical appointments. This is a valuable addition to the company’s services, as studies have shown that most medical practices have about a 20 percent no-show rate due to patient inability to find transportation.

The Fight Against COVID

Mako’s commitment to its patients and excellence has remained evident throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Recently passing its four millionth COVID test at its Vance County facility, Mako has been a significant player in the fight against the virus. The company’s success in testing led it to formally accept the role as the official COVID-19 test provider for both the Atlantic Coast Conference and the Big South Conference, ensuring that teams will be able to compete safely with one another.

As the pandemic progresses and the virus mutates, Mako has made sure that it is committed to staying on top of the latest variant testing. Recently, the organization identified COVID test samples with the most recent B.1.1.7 variant along with other virus variants. Its industry-leading testing ensures that it will be able to detect the new B.1.1.7 variants and other variants as they arise and help curb the spread of the virus as it inevitably mutates.

Values and Commitments

Mako’s commitment to supporting the national community during the pandemic is representative of its philanthropy and values that date back to the inception of the organization. When creating Mako, Price and Arant envisioned a Christian-value-led organization that emphasized charitable giving and community engagement. Since its founding, Mako has made sure to follow through on this vision.

Over the years, it has supported and provided funding to more than 400 charities and nonprofits, including those benefiting veterans, disabled individuals, and cancer research. Every year, it also donates millions in free medical services to those without access and volunteers thousands of hours with local nonprofits. Mako also seeks to empower veterans with meaningful careers, so more than half of its 500 employees are veterans. For their efforts, Chad Price and Mako Medical were recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor in 2020 with the Hire Vets Medallion.

Looking Ahead

Mako Medical is excited to grow its employee base and charitable efforts to become a full-service healthcare company. Rather than focusing on laboratory work, it is looking to expand its offerings to logistics, document management, medical waste, technology, and staffing divisions to serve its clients. As the organization looks toward the future, it hopes to continue its tradition of honoring veterans through employment, donating time and money to nonprofits, and continuing to make health care affordable and accessible. As a passionate disrupter in health care, Mako Medical still has many lives to change.
