Bobby Cannavale is one of those performers who has been busy since his debut 25 years ago but who you would not immediately recognize from your favorite film or TV program. Cannavale has been in a number of MCU films and TV shows, as well as in a number of HBO productions, including Sex and the City, Oz, Boardwalk Empire, and Vinyl. He’s done it all now; he’s even a Law & Order hat trick. Cannavale will continue to be very productive over the next several years, with films like Sing 2 and Blonde set for release. Since his most recent movie, Tom & Jerry, has already been released in cinemas and is available on HBO Max, we can expect to hear a lot more about Bobby Cannavale in the coming months. Whether or not he will reprise his role as Scott Lang in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantum Mania, we’ve listed all of his forthcoming film and TV projects below.
Thunder Force, April 9, 2021 (Completed)
Thunder Force, an action comedy set to premiere on Netflix in the near future, follows Emily Stanton (Octavia Spencer) and her estranged best friend Lydia (Melissa McCarthy) as they form the first superhero team after they both gain superpowers to defend their city from a variety of supervillains. At this time, just the two major parts have been confirmed, although the cast also includes Bobby Cannavale, Jason Bateman, Pom Klementieff, Tyrel Jackson Williams, and director Ben Falcone. Production on the Ben Falcone-directed film began in September of 2019 after being announced in March. The movie is now finished and will debut on Netflix on April 9, 2021.
Blonde, 2021 (post-production)
The new Netflix film Blonde, directed by Andrew Dominik, is based on the life and career of Hollywood superstar Marilyn Monroe, but it doesn’t seem like it will be anything like any of the other films based on Monroe’s life and work. Blonde, a film adaptation of Joyce Carol Oates’s 2000 book of the same name, will star Ana De Armas as a Hollywood superstar in a plot in which some characters are based on actual individuals but have been given false identities. For instance, Bobby Cannavale will portray The Ex-Athlete (a parody of Joe DiMaggio) and Adrien Brody will play The Playwright (a parody of Arthur Miller). And the rest of the cast, which features names like Julianne Nicholson, Caspar Phillipson, Scoot McNairy, and a slew of others, is just as good. The film adaptation of Blonde, which was first filmed for television in 2001, has been in the works for nearly a decade, with stars such as Naomi Watts and Jessica Chastain linked at various times. In the second half of 2019, production began and was completed, and the film is now awaiting distribution on Netflix.
Jolt: TBD (Post-Production)
In the film Jolt, played by Kate Beckinsale, we follow Lindy, a lady with significant anger problems who wears a shock vest to send jolts of electricity through her body in an effort to relax. The film will focus on Lindy after her chance for a happy life with Justin (Jai Courtney) is snuffed out by his terrible death. But when Lindy embarks on a killing spree to catch the culprit, she becomes the number one suspect in the eyes of Bobby Cannavale and Laverne Cox’s detective characters.
According to Deadline, filming on the action comedy Jolt began in the summer of 2019 in London; however, there is still no information on the film’s theatrical or (like many newer films) streaming release. With that crew and plot, however, we probably won’t have to wait too long for an update.
This Is The Night, TBD (Post-Production)
In 2020, James DeMonaco, director of The Purge, will helm This is the Night, a period drama starring Bobby Cannavale, Naomi Watts, Frank Grillo, and others about a teenage boy named Anthony (Cody Fairless-Lee) and his dramatic journey in the center of his small town. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the summer of 1982 is when This is the Night takes place, and at that time, Anthony goes on “a quest in his Rocky Balboa-obsessed town that swirls in his family members.” Watts and Grillo portray his parents.
Production on This is the Night began on Staten Island in May of 2018, and it was expected to last for around 26 days. Since then, there haven’t been many developments. Jason Blum and Blumhouse Productions are responsible for making this movie, which will be distributed by Universal Pictures.
Sing 2: December 22, 2021 (In Production)
Sing, an all-star animated musical released by Illumination Entertainment in December 2016, was a welcome departure from the studio’s Despicable Me and Minions franchises. When Sing 2 opens at the end of the year, most of the original cast will be back to reprise their roles. This includes Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Scarlett Johansson, Taron Egerton, and Tori Kelly. The group is on a trip to the Crystal Tower Theater to premiere a new performance, but before they can do that, they need to figure out how to win over the theater’s cruel owner, Jimmy Crystal (Bobby Cannavale).
In April 2019, Universal Pictures moved the release date of Sing 2 from December 25, 2020, to July 20, 2021. The release date was originally slated for early 2020 but was pushed back because of the COVID-19 epidemic.
Seriously Red: TBD (In Production)
Red (Krew Boylan, who also authored the book), a wild and crazy redhead, misinterprets the dress code at a company-sponsored party and finds herself immersed in a world of tribute artists and impersonators in the musical comedy Seriously Red. According to Deadline, Dolly Parton’s songs will serve as the soundtrack as Red sinks further into the craziness of country music. Alongside Daniel Webber, the film will feature Bobby Cannavale and his real-life girlfriend, Rose Byrne (who is also producing the film). The musical starring a Kenny Rogers imposter began filming in Australia in November 2020, but there is no information yet on when it will hit cinemas. There will be more of this raucous comedy in the coming months.
Lapham Rising: TBD (Post-Production)
Charlie Kessler’s film version of the Roger Rosenblatt book Lapham Rising has been in production for quite some time, but there is still no solid release date. If the film is faithful to the book, it will follow retired author Harry March (Frank Langella) as he spends his golden years in a tranquil area of the Hamptons but must deal with the arrival of a new multi-millionaire neighbor and the building of a massive estate directly across the road from his peaceful retreat. Instead of accepting the house as it is, Harry interprets it as a direct assault on all he believes in and wages a fight against it. A talking dog called Hector also appears; he is a devout Christian and a businessman.
Frank Langella will be joined by Bobby Cannavale, Ashley Benson, Stockard Channing, and Catherine Parker; however, their specific roles have not yet been disclosed (please have Cannavale voice the talking dog). Production on Lapham Rising started in May 2019 in Minnesota, according to Deadline, although the film’s release date or other information has yet to be announced.
Nine Perfect Strangers (TV Series): TBD (Post-Production)
Melissa McCarthy, Luke Evans, Bobby Cannavale, Samara Weaving, Regina Hall, Michael Shannon, and others will star in the upcoming Hulu limited series Nine Perfect Strangers, adapted from Liane Moriarty’s novel of the same name. The characters in the show meet at an exclusive 10-day “Mind and Body Total Transformation Retreat” run by the mysterious Masha (Nicole Kidman). According to The Hollywood Reporter, the gang has no clue what lies ahead, and things aren’t always what they appear.
The limited series, written by Edge of Tomorrow’s John-Henry Butterworth and Big Little Lies’ David E. Kelley, allegedly began filming in August 2020 and finished in December 2020, as attested by an Instagram post by Nicole Kidman. The Academy Award-winning actress has also confirmed that the premiere of Nine Perfect Strangers will occur in 2021. It seems like the next few years will keep Bobby Cannavale just as busy as they have been in the past. We need to figure out a method to bring him back for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantum Anarchy in 2022.
