In her 30 years, the fictitious German heiress Anna Delvey, whose real name is Anna Sorokin, has lived numerous lives. She’s been a Russian immigrant, a fashion student, a New York socialite, an arts and culture entrepreneur, a Rikers Island inmate, a well-heeled celebrity defendant, a convicted felon, and the inspiration for Netflix’s smash hit Inventing Anna. When did Anna Sorokin get out of prison?

Let’s get straight to Anna Sorokin has not been imprisoned. At least not at the same facility where she was locked up when she get punishing for the first time in 2019. Sorokin paid all her obligations as soon as she was released. She paid back the $200,000 she owed the banks with a share of the $320,000 she earned from Netflix for the rights to her life story. And she had to pay an additional $25,000 in fines to the state of New York.

She moved into the NoMad Hotel in downtown Manhattan after paying off her debts and continued posting beautiful images of her post-prison life on Instagram. She gave numerous interviews and made a few controversial claims regarding her time in prison.

Her stay in Rikers was “therapeutic” on Good Morning America. She moved into a Manhattan apartment and began advertising a future new fashion collaboration with Paul Cupo, a former Hood By Air designer. She kept in touch with her parole officer regularly. She hired a videographer to capture her new life.

Why was Anna Sorokin detained again?

Immigration authorities arrested Sorokin in March 2021 for overstaying her visa. When she was initially let go from prison, she had an immigration detainer in her name, but she was not in any hurry to leave New York. Sorokin was supposed to be deported back to Germany (Auf Wiedersehen, Anna!) on March 26. Still, he applied for relief, which is legalese for “please don’t make me go back to Germany,” and as a result, he remained in detention in the United States. Sorokin has requested asylum through her lawyer, Audrey Thomas.
