Angelina Jolie attended the Venice Film Festival for the world premiere of her film Maria, where she portrays the legendary opera singer Maria Callas.
Jolie is now reflecting on her journey to rediscover her singing voice. The film, which premiered to critical acclaim, demanded that she use her singing skills extensively.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Jolie revealed the challenging process of shooting the psychological drama. She admitted that her journey to reclaim her singing voice was influenced by past criticism from an ex.
Reflecting on her experience filming Maria, Angelina Jolie described it as “an out-of-body experience” since she doesn’t typically sing. She revealed that a past relationship, where she faced unkind comments about her singing, led her to believe she couldn’t sing well. Despite her theater school background, this negativity had a significant impact on her. Jolie shared that overcoming these past doubts and discovering her soprano voice was a crucial part of her journey.
She continued, “I always believed I had a low voice, but when I told the singing instructor about my deeper voice, he surprised me by saying, ‘No, you’re a soprano.’ It was shocking and strange, but I realized that our voices can change with life experiences.”
In recent years, Angelina Jolie’s personal life has faced intense public scrutiny following her divorce from Brad Pitt in September 2016. Their highly publicized separation has included serious abuse allegations and led to a strained relationship between Brad and their children.
Meanwhile, Maria is directed by Pablo LarraÃn, known for his work on Jackie and Spencer. The film focuses on the final chapter of Maria Callas’ life in 1977, depicting the opera diva’s struggles with substance abuse, a declining voice, and significant weight loss. Jolie’s performance received widespread acclaim, and she was visibly moved to tears during the standing ovation following the premiere.
