ams-OSRAM Sells Off With Chip Peers While Debt Buyback and Photonics Bet Run in Parallel

Shares of ams-OSRAM came under heavy selling pressure on Thursday, with the stock dropping 5.9% to EUR 23.90 from the previous session’s close of EUR 25.40. The decline was not tied to any company-specific announcement. Instead, market participants pointed to a broad-based retreat from technology names, particularly around the artificial intelligence segment, that weighed on European semiconductor manufacturers across the board. Peers including Infineon and STMicroelectronics also booked notable losses as investors trimmed exposure to the chip sector.

The pullback follows a stretch of pronounced gains for ams-OSRAM, during which new product launches and upgraded analyst targets had driven sentiment. That rally left little cushion for a sector-wide risk-off move.

Bond Buyback Set to Open October 15

Separately from the day’s trading action, the company is pressing ahead with efforts to shore up its balance sheet. On September 30, ams-OSRAM announced a public tender offer for its convertible bonds maturing in 2027. The offer targets holders of those notes and covers a maximum nominal volume of EUR 143.0 million plus accrued interest. Should the planned sale of the CMOS image sensor business not be completed by the deadline, that ceiling drops to EUR 118 million.

The repurchase is designed to chip away at the group’s existing debt load in stages. It is closely tied to the divestment plans and is intended to strengthen the company’s financial structure. Creditors can tender their paper between October 15 and November 16. Net proceeds from asset sales by the guarantors are to be allocated proportionally between the tendered convertible bonds and the senior notes.

Analyst Upgrade Follows Photonics Presentations

Analysts, meanwhile, have been focused on the company’s technological pipeline. Deutsche Bank Research maintained a “Hold” rating on ams-OSRAM while raising its price target from CHF 19 to CHF 23. The revision followed new products and concepts the company unveiled at the European Conference on Optical Communications in Málaga.

Those presentations build on momentum from roughly two weeks earlier, when ams-OSRAM reported a breakthrough in thin-film VCSELs for AI data centers and simultaneously introduced a multicore fiber solution for optical connections. According to a dpa-AFX report, the stock jumped sharply after that disclosure. The company also rolled out new products for its automotive lighting division, including NIGHT BREAKER LED SPEED retrofit lamps in the H8, HB4 and H16 types, which carry official ECE approval.

With the product news digested, attention now shifts to execution of the announced financial measures and to the next set of hard numbers. ams-OSRAM is scheduled to publish its third-quarter 2026 results on November 13.
