Amazon continues to demonstrate its ambition far beyond e-commerce and cloud computing. The tech behemoth is aggressively pursuing growth in disparate new industries, a strategy highlighted by two recent developments: the expansion of its self-driving taxi unit, Zoox, and a targeted move into the high-demand weight-loss drug market. These initiatives reveal how the company leverages its core strengths to enter lucrative future markets.

Capital Expenditure and Market Reaction

Investors have shown a measured response to these operational advances outside Amazon’s primary revenue streams. The company’s shares closed yesterday at 183.46 euros, trading approximately four percent below their 50-day moving average.

This market caution is largely attributable to Amazon’s substantial capital requirements. For the current fiscal year 2026, the corporation has outlined investment plans totaling roughly $200 billion. The majority of this capital is earmarked for expanding its artificial intelligence infrastructure and its cloud division, AWS. With free cash flow having already seen a noticeable decline by the end of 2025, these significant expenditures are expected to continue pressuring liquidity in the present year. However, the Zoox and Pharmacy initiatives exemplify how Amazon is strategically deploying its expensive, in-house cloud and logistics networks to penetrate high-margin sectors.

Autonomous Driving: Testing in the Sun Belt

Amazon’s subsidiary, Zoox, is extending its autonomous vehicle testing to Dallas and Phoenix. This expansion brings its operational footprint to ten U.S. cities and includes establishing a new operational control center in Arizona. Initially, the company will utilize modified SUVs equipped with safety drivers to map the new territories.

Achieving this goal is contingent upon Amazon securing comprehensive regulatory approvals.

The fleet expansion signals Amazon’s commitment to compete in the autonomous vehicle race against rivals like Alphabet’s Waymo and Tesla. Zoox benefits from immense structural advantages provided by its parent company, namely the massive cloud infrastructure of AWS and unparalleled logistics expertise.

Healthcare Disruption: Focus on Transparency and Speed

Concurrently, Amazon is attacking one of today’s most lucrative markets through its pharmacy division. Amazon Pharmacy has begun distributing Eli Lilly’s Zepbound KwikPen, a weight-loss medication from the sought-after class of GLP-1 drugs. A central pillar of this move is price transparency: patients are shown a clear cash price of $299 for the starting dose directly before completing their purchase.

This business segment also gains tremendous leverage from Amazon’s proprietary logistics network. For new prescriptions, the company already offers same-day delivery in nearly 3,000 cities and intends to extend this service to around 4,500 cities by the end of 2026. The combination of rapid availability and a straightforward pricing model is designed to capture market share within the booming healthcare sector.
