Shares of AbCellera Biologics rocketed more than 33% in Monday trading after the biotech unveiled Phase-2 data showing its experimental antibody ABCL635 delivered a dramatic reduction in menopausal hot flashes — results that appear to stack up favorably against rival programs from larger pharmaceutical players.
The stock climbed to €8.00, trimming the gap to its 52-week high to just under 5%. The surge came as investors digested clinical readouts that hit both primary endpoints with high statistical significance, alongside a fresh collaboration with Vertex Pharmaceuticals announced in parallel.
A Deeper Look at the Data
The randomized, placebo-controlled trial enrolled 92 postmenopausal women aged 40 to 75, each receiving a single 600-milligram subcutaneous dose. After four weeks, the treatment group saw hot flash frequency drop by 8.8 events per day versus a 3.5-event reduction in the placebo arm — an 83% decrease compared with 33% for placebo.
Severity scores also moved decisively: a 1.4-point improvement in treated patients against a 0.3-point decline in the control group. Beyond the physical symptoms, participants reported better sleep quality and overall well-being, with 84% noting a tangible improvement in their condition.
Analysts were quick to benchmark the results against approved or in-development products from Astellas and Bayer. On a placebo-adjusted basis, ABCL635 delivered a 5.3-point reduction in symptom frequency — a figure that compares favorably with what those competitors achieved in their respective Phase-3 trials.
Safety Profile Emerges as a Differentiator
Market watchers zeroed in on the safety picture, where ABCL635 appears to hold an edge. Comparable approaches have sometimes carried liver enzyme warnings, but the AbCellera study reported no serious adverse events and no negative signals on hepatic markers. The most common side effects were headache, fatigue, and injection-site reactions.
CEO Carl Hansen called the results a milestone, positioning the drug as a potential leading non-hormonal therapy for a market estimated at over 12 million affected women in the United States alone, representing roughly $6 billion in commercial opportunity.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying AbCellera Biologics?
The Financial Picture: A Mixed Bag
The clinical optimism lands against a backdrop of softer-than-expected second-quarter numbers. Revenue came in at $4.05 million, well below the consensus estimate of approximately $8.1 million and down sharply from the $17.1 million reported in the year-ago period. The net loss widened to $55.4 million, or $0.18 per share, compared with a $34.7 million deficit in the prior-year quarter.
Liquidity, however, remains a pillar of strength. The company ended the quarter with more than $500 million in cash reserves — roughly $565 million in cash and marketable securities, with total available liquidity of about $675 million.
Strategic Moves and Pipeline Momentum
The Vertex collaboration announced alongside the clinical data brings an upfront payment of $28 million, with potential milestone payments and royalties to follow. That deal builds on an existing alliance with Jazz Pharmaceuticals, inked in June, which includes $56 million in upfront payments and up to $792 million in milestones per program for multispecific antibodies targeting gastrointestinal cancers.
The company has also strengthened its board, appointing Dr. Victor Sandor and Dr. Lynn Seely as independent directors. Those additions coincided with confirmation that dosing has completed in the Phase-1 study of another candidate, ABCL575, with initial data expected in the fourth quarter of 2026.
What Analysts Are Saying
Wall Street remains largely constructive despite the quarterly miss. BMO analysts model peak sales potential of approximately $2.3 billion for ABCL635, while Cantor Fitzgerald reaffirmed a $12 price target on the stock. The average analyst target sits at $10.63, according to Zacks Investment Research, with estimates from the eight covering analysts ranging between $7.00 and $13.00.
The shares have had a volatile year, still sitting roughly 14% below their 52-week high of €7.54 before Monday’s move. Insider activity has offered a quiet vote of confidence: roughly $0.1 million in insider purchases over the past three months with no executive sales recorded.
Management now shifts focus to Phase-3 planning and regulatory discussions, with the market watching to see whether ABCL635 can maintain its apparent edge as it moves into later-stage development.
