A24 Leads the Directors Guild of America 2023 Film Nominations!

Aftersun and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” were the films that really put the studio in the spotlight.

The Directors Guild of America (DGA) publicly announced today the names of the individuals who have been nominated for DGA Awards in the film categories for the year 2023. The nominees highlight the achievements of filmmakers or directors for theatrical features as well as directors who made their first appearance in a feature film.

This list, which is one of the shortest lists in the awards season, is one of the most prestigious. Even though there are no directors who have been nominated more than once, the production company A24 leads the pack with a total of two nominations. These nominations are for the box office smash Everything Everywhere All at Once by the Daniels and Aftersun by Charlotte Wells, who is making her directorial debut.

The hit movie at the box office: Gun Maverick, the heritage sequel to the iconic Tom Cruise film Top Gun, is now leading the pack in the competitive category for theatrical features. In addition to The Banshees of Inisherin, the films Tár and The Fabelmans, this is a semi-autobiographical feature film, earned nominations.

In addition, films such as Emily the Criminal, Happening, Saint Omer, and Murina, all of which marked their directorial debuts, were awarded in the first-time category.

Many films that have been widely discussed, such as James Cameron’s Avatar, Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis, and Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale were omitted from the list, despite the fact that they had previously been nominated for prizes such as the Golden Globes. Additionally, debut director Elegance Bratton was not given the opportunity to direct The Inspection.

In spite of the fact that several female filmmakers have produced critically acclaimed works, the list does not include a single one of them. The films Women Talking and She Said, both directed by Sarah Polley and Maria Schrader, are two examples of standouts that, given their positive reception from the film critics, would appear to be natural choices for inclusion. The Woman King, directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, had a successful run at the box office and was met with positive critical reception, making it a much anticipated picture for the next awards season.

The biopic Till, directed by Chinonye Chukwu and focusing on Mamie Till-Mobley, Emmett Till’s mother, has swiftly established itself as a film that fans should keep an eye on. The absence of women filmmakers comes not long after the fact that no female directors were awarded at the Golden Globes. As the Oscars get closer, it’s still anyone’s guess as to whether or not there will be more nominations for women.

The date of the Directors Guild of America (DGA) Awards ceremony is set for February 18th. Have a look at the complete list of nominations that are provided down below:
