BioNTech’s Third Quarter: A Profit, a Pipeline Milestone, and a Works Council With a Grievance

BioNTech closed the trading week on a firm note, with its shares adding 2.3% on Friday. The gain came against a backdrop that offered investors plenty to weigh: a return to profit in the third quarter, a fresh clinical milestone in breast cancer, and a public rebuke from the company’s own works council over how management has treated staff during its corporate restructuring.

Works Council Puts Management on the Spot

The employee representatives went public on Tuesday, criticizing the way the Mainz-based group has handled employees through its reorganization. According to reporting by the Süddeutsche Zeitung, the works council pointed to accounts of sexism, racism, discrimination and threats. BioNTech responded that it takes the allegations seriously.

A Profitable Quarter, a Loss for the Year So Far

The quarterly figures, released alongside the labor dispute, showed revenue of EUR 1,289.2 million for the third quarter of 2026 and a net profit of EUR 184.5 million. Management attributed the year-on-year decline in quarterly revenue chiefly to the expected drop in demand for COVID-19 vaccines.

The nine-month picture looks very different. Revenue for the first three quarters of 2026 totaled EUR 1,512.9 million, while the company booked a net loss of EUR 1,168.2 million over the same period.

Cash remains abundant. Liquid funds, cash equivalents and securities investments stood at EUR 16.2 billion as of September 30, according to the company. For the full year, BioNTech raised the lower bound of its revenue guidance and now expects a range of EUR 1.7 billion to EUR 1.9 billion.

Analysts Trim Targets but Keep the Faith

Several analysts cut their price targets on Wednesday while leaving their positive ratings intact — a combination that says as much about tempered expectations as it does about continued conviction. Mohit Bansal of Wells Fargo lowered his target to $125 from $140, according to media reports, while sticking with an “Overweight” rating. Terence Flynn of Morgan Stanley also reduced his target, to $106 from $114, and likewise kept “Overweight.”

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BioNTech?

The shared direction is notable: lower price marks paired with favorable verdicts. For investors, the friendly label matters less than the assumptions behind it — what progress can justify the valuation being applied.

DYNASTY-Breast02 Hits Its Primary Endpoint — With a Caveat

A concrete test arrived on October 26, when BioNTech and DualityBio reported that their Phase 3 DYNASTY-Breast02 study met its primary endpoint. The improvement in progression-free survival was statistically significant, but moderate in size. Overall survival data were not yet mature, leaving a fuller clinical assessment dependent on how that part of the results develops.

The endpoint is a positive building block, though the modest magnitude of the benefit argues for a measured reading. Reaching an endpoint is one thing; how decisively a treatment alters the course of disease is another.

Two Yardsticks, One Stock

What emerges from the week is a company that must be judged on two fronts at once. The trajectory of the vaccine business sets part of the economic baseline, while clinical results must demonstrate how durable the outlook beyond it really is. The lowered price targets fit that more cautious weighting — and the study progress offers a case for a more convincing valuation, provided further data underpin its clinical value.
