Novo Nordisk Lifts 2026 Outlook as CFO Change and Insider Sale Muddy the Signal

Novo Nordisk raised its full-year guidance on Wednesday, but the same day delivered a pair of disclosures that give investors plenty to weigh: a new finance chief and a share sale by its top scientist.

The Danish drugmaker now expects adjusted sales and adjusted operating profit for 2026 to land anywhere between a 2% decline and 2% growth at constant exchange rates. That is a marked improvement on the prior range, which spanned flat to a 6% drop. Both figures are adjusted and strip out currency effects.

A quarter that cuts two ways

Reported and adjusted numbers told very different stories in the third quarter of 2026. Adjusted sales rose 6% to DKK 79.2 billion, while adjusted operating profit jumped 27% to DKK 31,720 million. Sales of the Wegovy pill reached DKK 5.39 billion.

Strip out the adjustments, though, and the picture darkens. Reported operating profit fell 9% at constant currencies, dragged down by DKK 8.7 billion in non-cash impairments. Sales came in at DKK 79,195 million, up 4% at constant exchange rates, with the obesity business growing 22%.

That gap between the two profit lines is the crux of the debate. Bulls point to the 27% adjusted surge as proof that Novo can squeeze more out of each extra krone of revenue; bears note that the impairments are real charges, and that even the upgraded guidance still permits a decline.

New CFO, and a share sale

Alongside the forecast, Novo Nordisk named Luigi La Corte as executive vice president and chief financial officer, according to Reuters. La Corte was CFO of Galderma at the time of his appointment and succeeds Karsten Munk Knudsen, who leaves the company at year-end.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Novo Nordisk?

Separately, Martin Holst Lange, executive vice president and chief scientific officer, sold 12,000 B-shares at DKK 285.00 apiece on Wednesday, according to media reports. The stock posted a daily move of -4.1% on the same day.

The insider sale lands against the upgraded outlook, leaving investors to decide which signal carries more weight. Those betting on a continued recovery will focus on whether the adjusted earnings momentum holds; the more cautious will keep an eye on the charges running through the reported result.

Buybacks and a research docket

Novo also disclosed transactions under its ongoing buyback programme on Tuesday, including purchases through Monday. Since 4 February 2026, repurchases have totalled 41,714,179 B-shares, worth DKK 11,564,364,801.

Roughly a week earlier, the company flagged 26 abstracts for ObesityWeek 2026, running 14–17 November. The lineup includes CagriSema analyses, real-world Wegovy findings and semaglutide research in children aged six to under twelve.

For now, the investment case rests on whether the obesity franchise keeps growing and whether that growth flows through to adjusted profit — and on whether further impairments stay contained. The next real test will be fresh business figures that either confirm the raised guidance or undercut it.
