Two brokerage notes published a day apart have framed the debate over Moderna less as a referendum on its melanoma vaccine and more as a dispute about what the stock’s extraordinary run already reflects. William Blair downgraded the shares from Outperform to Market Perform on Tuesday, while Piper Sandler lifted its price target to $230 from $167 on Monday and kept an Overweight rating.
The split verdict lands after a year in which Moderna has climbed 646% since the start of January. Blair’s rationale, as reported in the media, centred on valuation following that rally — and, in the fuller account, on clinical and biological risks should intismeran be extended beyond melanoma. The call was not a re-rating of the trial results themselves.
What the Phase 3 Actually Showed
Roughly a week earlier, Moderna and Merck disclosed detailed findings from INTerpath-001, their Phase 3 study in patients whose melanoma had been fully removed surgically. The trial enrolled patients with stage IIB to IV disease.
The combination of intismeran autogene and Keytruda met its endpoints for recurrence-free survival and for distant metastasis-free survival. Against Keytruda alone, it cut the risk of relapse or death by 42%. The risk of distant metastases or death fell by 38% — a reduction that media coverage flagged as smaller than the one seen in the earlier Phase 2 trial.
Overall survival data were not yet mature, the companies said, adding that they were in talks with regulators. Moderna also noted that the INTerpath programme spans nine Phase 2 and Phase 3 studies.
A Leak, an Early Release, and a Journal Acceptance
The detailed results reached the public ahead of schedule after a data leak, arriving before the companies’ planned ESMO presentation. Alongside the disclosure, the partners said the full results had been accepted for publication in the New England Journal of Medicine.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Moderna?
Markets met the news with profit-taking rather than fresh buying. Reuters characterised the selloff as investors cashing in after months of gains — a reading consistent with Blair’s emphasis on where the share price had travelled rather than on any flaw in the data.
Bancel Sets His Sights on 2027
Regulatory strategy was sketched out the same Monday by CEO Stéphane Bancel in comments to STAT. Moderna and Merck, he said, are working at full speed toward an FDA submission for intismeran, with approval anticipated in 2027.
Moderna also hosted an oncology investor event on 24 October, with the presentation and a recording archived in its investor relations section. Coverage dated 25 October suggested the conversation had shifted toward practical clinical use — and toward whether personalised cancer vaccines might be deployed in other tumour types.
The Next Hard Date
Investors will get their next scheduled update on 6 November 2026, when Moderna reports third-quarter 2026 financial results and holds a webcast at 8:00 a.m. ET to discuss corporate progress. Between now and then, the argument is likely to remain what it has been: not whether the melanoma data are real, but how much of a 646% advance they can justify.
