Micron’s Idaho Giveback, Taiwan Labor Pact and a 400-Layer NAND Roadmap

Micron Technology is spreading its bets across three fronts at once: community spending in its Idaho backyard, a labor settlement in Taiwan, and a next-generation memory roadmap that leans on stacking rather than shrinking.

The company said Tuesday it will commit more than $67 million to Idaho public causes, split between public transit, housing initiatives and savings accounts for eligible children. Transit accounts for $11.6 million, housing programs for $10.5 million, and the children’s savings accounts for more than $45 million.

Shares Catch a Sector Tailwind

The stock rose 3.6% on Monday, with media reports tying the advance to record quarterly results from SK hynix that lifted memory-chip names across the board. The Korean rival also warned that demand for memory chips could outstrip supply through 2030, according to those reports — a signal that sent Micron and its peers higher together.

A Symbolic Walkout in Taoyuan

On the labor side, eleven union officials at Micron’s Taoyuan site began a symbolic strike on October 22. The 24-hour action targeted the company’s rules on bonuses and profit sharing. Reuters reported the walkout, while Micron pointed to a separate agreement reached with the union at its larger Taichung facility.

That Taichung deal was signed roughly a week earlier and covers quarterly profit sharing along with salary adjustments and higher shift allowances, according to the company. The Taichung union subsequently withdrew from the planned mediation process.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Micron Technology?

Quarterly Bonuses From Fiscal 2027

Globally, Micron plans to introduce quarterly profit-linked bonuses for employees starting in fiscal 2027, paid on top of existing annual performance incentives. Payouts will be split evenly — 50% in cash and 50% in stock.

For Taiwan specifically, the company will raise employer retirement contributions from 8% to 10% and add three extra paid vacation days.

Stacking More Layers Instead of Shrinking Cells

On the technology side, Micron laid out its next NAND generation on October 21: G11 3D NAND with more than 400 layers, which the company says will double bit density versus the current generation. Mass production is slated for the second half of 2027.

The same day, Micron said it will not pursue the so-called 4F² DRAM architecture, citing limited density gains along with higher costs and greater manufacturing complexity. Instead, the company intends to keep scaling its conventional 6F² technology while developing 3D DRAM in parallel.
