Nebius is being judged on more than its revenue line. The stock’s latest drop came as investors reassessed the price of financing aggressive AI buildouts, even though the company’s operating story still shows powerful top-line growth.
That tension helps explain why the shares can weaken even when the business appears to be expanding quickly. Reuters reported a broader selloff in debt-heavy AI infrastructure names, with Nebius among the neocloud stocks caught up in the move. Higher inflation, the report said, added to expectations of higher US interest rates. In other words, the market is looking not just at AI demand, but at how that demand is funded.
The company’s fundamentals still show the scale of the opportunity. In its latest reported quarter, Nebius posted revenue of US$582.30 million, up 454% from a year earlier. At the same time, the business remains deeply unprofitable, and the analyst consensus expects a loss of US$3.48 per share for the full year.
That combination matters. Revenue growth shows the platform is scaling fast. It does not, on its own, answer whether the expansion can translate into durable earnings. Investors focused only on the sales surge miss the losses; those focused only on the losses miss the size of the buildout.
There are also signs that Nebius is trying to push pricing higher as it expands. Media reports said the company raised prices for several Nvidia-based virtual machines by more than 30% versus the first quarter. Those same reports pointed to an annualized recurring revenue run rate of US$3.0 billion and customer commitments from Microsoft and Meta of more than US$40 billion.
Those figures help counter the idea that Nebius is simply pouring capital into an empty market. Higher pricing can support revenue growth, and long-term commitments suggest demand exists. But commitments are not the same as booked revenue, and they certainly are not the same as profit.
The balance sheet side of the story is harder to ignore. Reported debt stands at US$8.5 billion, giving the interest-rate debate more bite. Reuters characterized the recent selling in AI infrastructure suppliers as a sign of changing sentiment, with positioning and funding costs taking precedence over any broad collapse in AI demand.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nebius?
That distinction is crucial. A company can still be growing rapidly and yet see its valuation pressured if investors become more sensitive to capital intensity. Strong demand does not automatically shield a stock from scrutiny over how expensive it is to keep scaling.
Nebius also has company-specific developments in motion. On 1 October, it announced the acquisition of Inferize, a move intended to strengthen the technical foundation of the Nebius Token Factory for production AI inference. Separately, Rosenblatt Securities initiated coverage on 7 October with a Buy rating and a US$304 price target, according to media reports.
Insider trading activity has also appeared in the background. Marc Boroditsky sold 7,000 shares on Monday, and the related SEC filing was made on Tuesday. The transaction was carried out under a pre-arranged Rule 10b5-1 trading plan.
None of those items, taken alone, explains the stock’s latest move. The acquisition points to execution, the analyst call points to upside potential, and the insider sale was planned in advance. The market’s pressure looks more like a reassessment of financing conditions across the sector than a reaction to a single corporate event.
The broader backdrop is large enough to keep the debate going. Gartner expects nearly US$1 trillion in AI infrastructure spending in 2026, followed by another US$6 trillion from 2027 to 2030. It also projects that 80% of neocloud providers will no longer be independent after 2030.
That does not forecast Nebius’ fate. It does, however, underline how unforgiving the economics of this industry may be. For Nebius, the key question is no longer just whether it can grow. It is whether that growth can ultimately be turned into returns that justify the capital it takes to produce them.
