IREN’s Earnings Day Arrives With Nvidia Tailwinds — But the Ghost of Last Quarter Looms Large

The timing could hardly be more awkward — or more opportune. IREN steps into the earnings spotlight on the very day the entire AI infrastructure complex is basking in Nvidia’s glow. The chip giant’s blockbuster quarter, with revenue up 106% year-on-year to $96.2 billion and a data center business that surged 117% to $89 billion, sent neocloud names like CoreWeave, Nebius and IREN higher in overnight trading. By the time European markets opened, IREN shares had extended those gains, climbing 3.7% to €35.33 after closing the prior session at €34.08.

Yet for all the Nvidia-fueled optimism, the stock arrives at this moment carrying considerable baggage. The current price sits roughly half below the 52-week high of €68.61 touched in early November, and the shares trade beneath both their 50-day and 200-day moving averages. The seven-day slide of 6.6% heading into the report underscores just how fragile sentiment has become.

The Weight of Last Quarter’s Miss

That nervousness is not without foundation. IREN’s third-quarter performance was a bruising affair: earnings per share came in at minus $0.74 against analyst expectations of minus $0.19 — a negative surprise of more than 280% — while revenue of $144.79 million undershot consensus by roughly 34%. The stock shed nearly 7% in the aftermath.

For today’s fourth-quarter print, the bar remains modest. Analysts are looking for a loss per share of around $0.50 on revenue of $145.17 million — barely an improvement on the prior quarter. The secondary article’s consensus figure of roughly $0.55 per share loss reflects a similar picture: this is a company still deep in the red, and the market knows it.

The scars from that last miss are shaping expectations. After such a dramatic shortfall, investor tolerance for another disappointment is thin, and the question hovering over today’s release is whether management can demonstrate that its ambitious growth targets are translating into tangible results.

The ARR Question That Decides Everything

At the heart of the bull case sits a single number: the annualized revenue guidance of more than $4 billion for 2026. IREN set that target on the back of AI customer contracts worth $2.8 billion, and it represents a staggering leap for a company with trailing-twelve-month revenue of roughly $757 million. The path to that figure runs through the company’s 5-gigawatt growth roadmap and the successful ramp of new data center capacity.

Whether management reaffirms that target with credible progress indicators will likely determine today’s market reaction. Confirmation backed by concrete milestones would keep the growth narrative intact; vague language or any hint of a pullback could reignite doubts about execution speed — and after last quarter’s disappointment, the market’s patience is limited.

More Than Just a Mining Story

The market’s evolving perception of IREN is itself a story worth noting. No longer viewed primarily as a Bitcoin miner, the company is increasingly treated as a bellwether for AI infrastructure demand. That repositioning has been backed by real developments: the completed acquisition of Mirantis, a multi-year jersey sponsorship deal with the Golden State Warriors beginning in the 2026/27 season, and new executive appointments including a CISO, CPO and CDO that signal organizational professionalization. A mentioned partnership with Anthropic further cements the company’s ties to well-funded AI developers.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying IREN?

The Nvidia numbers provide the macro tailwind. CFO Colette Kress projected hyperscaler capex climbing from $800 billion in 2026 to $1.3 trillion in 2027, and Amazon has ordered an additional two million GPUs. For those who believe the demand wave is real, IREN sits precisely in the sweet spot between energy, data centers and AI compute.

The Valuation Tightrope

But the fundamentals tell a more sobering story. The stock’s price-to-earnings ratio of over 80 — or roughly 79 by some calculations — prices in an enormous amount of future growth for a company that is still losing money operationally. The volatility metrics are equally striking: annualized volatility of 134% over 30 days and a beta of 4.29 make IREN one of the most jittery names in the AI infrastructure segment.

The analyst community reflects this split personality. The average price target stands at $83 with a “Moderate Buy” rating across 21 houses, implying significant upside from current levels. Cantor Fitzgerald raised its target to $99 in May, and HC Wainwright followed with $90. But Goldman Sachs maintains a cautious “neutral” stance, and Weiss Ratings downgraded the stock to “sell” in July. That divergence captures the dilemma perfectly: enormous structural potential weighed against an operational track record of disappointment.

Two Paths Forward

The immediate catalyst is today’s report itself. A strong showing — confirmed ARR guidance, evidence that the $2.8 billion in contracts are generating revenue, and capacity expansion on schedule — could spark a meaningful recovery given the stock’s recent slide and an RSI of 46 that leaves room to move in either direction.

The bear case is equally clear. Another significant revenue miss on the order of last quarter’s 30%-plus deviation would be the classic trigger for a fresh sell-off. Nikesh Arora, CEO of Palo Alto Networks, has publicly warned of price erosion in the neocloud segment, and intensifying competitive pressure would hit a company whose valuation rests on future growth rather than current earnings.

The distance to the 52-week low of €19.01 — roughly 86% of upside — versus the near-50% drawdown from the November peak tells you everything about the stock’s pendulum-like behavior. This is not a stable sideways grind; it is a high-wire act.

For now, the Nvidia tailwind provides cover. But IREN’s own numbers will ultimately determine whether the stock’s story is one of delivery or deferral. The market has heard the promises — today it wants proof.
