XRP’s Quiet Infrastructure Build: How a Stablecoin, a Bond, and a Five-Second Trade Are Reshaping Ripple’s Pitch

The noise around XRP has rarely been louder, yet the most consequential developments for the Ripple ecosystem in recent days have had little to do with the token’s price swings. Instead, a steady drumbeat of institutional plumbing—a stablecoin crossing the $2 billion threshold, a five-second cross-border settlement, and a freshly upsized corporate bond—is quietly recasting how Wall Street engages with the XRP Ledger.

The headline-grabbing moment came Monday when JPMorgan’s blockchain unit, Kinexys, teamed up with Ripple, Mastercard, and Ondo to execute the cross-border redemption of a tokenized US Treasury fund on the XRP Ledger. The transaction cleared in under five seconds, a demonstration that the ledger’s architecture can support institutional settlement processes outside traditional banking hours—a capability that extends well beyond the speculative trading that typically dominates XRP headlines.

RLUSD Crosses the $2 Billion Mark

The centerpiece of Ripple’s stablecoin ambitions, RLUSD, surpassed $2 billion in market capitalization on Tuesday, a milestone the company announced itself. The backing is split across two networks: roughly $962.8 million sits on the XRP Ledger, while another $1.05 billion resides on Ethereum. Over the past 30 days, the stablecoin’s market cap has expanded by 31.45 percent, with $11.81 billion moving across 1.39 million transactions on the various networks during that stretch.

RLUSD is increasingly functioning as more than just a transfer vehicle within Ripple’s orbit. The company has unveiled an institutional credit fund alongside Clearpool and Cicada Partners that will use RLUSD as the primary lending instrument on the XRP Ledger. Ripple is participating as a limited partner without guaranteeing the underlying loans. Cicada Partners reports having structured more than $860 million in loans since 2021, while Clearpool has extended over $930 million in the same period. The fund’s final implementation awaits validator approval of the XLS-65 and XLS-66 technical standards.

The stablecoin is also gaining traction as collateral in decentralized lending markets. The FXRP token has been approved by the lending platform Morpho as security for an RLUSD market with $280 million in volume, opening another avenue beyond conventional transaction usage.

A $275 Million Vote of Confidence

Separately, Ripple Prime, the company’s institutional brokerage arm, has placed a bond that was upsized to $275 million. The private placement, completed August 18, matures in 2031 and carries an 8.25 percent coupon. Piper Sandler & Co. led the offering, and rating agency KBRA assigned a BBB rating, consistent with Ripple Prime’s existing issuer rating. The proceeds are earmarked for expanding the brokerage business, which provides institutional clients with access to digital assets.

The capital raise comes as Ripple’s payments network processes increasingly significant volumes. In the second quarter of 2025, Ripple Payments handled $1.3 trillion in transactions and now works with more than 300 institutions across 55 countries. A new partnership with South Korea’s Jeonbuk Bank will use Ripple Payments for cross-border remittances, extending the network’s geographic footprint.

Protocol Upgrades and the Privacy Question

On the technical front, the XRP Ledger’s version 3.3.0, active since August 6, introduced several new capabilities, including Atomic Transactions, delegated permissions, and sponsored fees. Ripple has voted in favor of including the permission-delegation extension in the update, a feature deemed critical for regulated institutions requiring granular access controls within their on-chain processes.

The network is also weighing so-called Confidential Transfers, which would encrypt account balances and transaction amounts while keeping account details visible. Activation would require approval from 80 percent of validators over a two-week period. The ledger currently hosts $1.38 billion in tokenized real-world assets, including a tokenized share class of a US dollar liquidity fund from Aviva Investors.

Price Action Tells a Different Story

The market’s response to these developments has been muted at best. XRP traded at $1.43 on Wednesday, down 3.4 percent on the day, though still up 43 percent over the previous seven days. The token has gained roughly 29 percent over the past month. A flash crash on Saturday, which saw the price drop 37 percent within minutes, underscored lingering market fragility.

The longer-term picture remains challenging: XRP is down 50 percent over the trailing twelve months, a reminder that the speculative cycle has been unforgiving even as the underlying ecosystem matures.

CEO Brad Garlinghouse has framed the stablecoin push within a broader ambition: Ripple’s services, including Hidden Road and GTreasury, already process annual transaction volumes on par with Visa, yet only a fraction of that flows on-chain. Each additional percentage point of on-chain volume would translate to a $160 billion revenue opportunity, in his estimation—a target where RLUSD serves as the bridge between traditional finance and blockchain infrastructure.

Whether these institutional partnerships translate into measurable on-ledger transaction volume remains the key question for investors. The infrastructure is being built methodically, deal by deal, independent of the political debates swirling in Washington. For now, the gap between XRP’s volatile price action and the steady accumulation of institutional building blocks has rarely been wider.
