Palantir’s Two-Speed Rally: Commercial Rocket Fuel Meets an Overbought Tape

The arithmetic behind Palantir Technologies’ latest earnings beat is straightforward enough: revenue of $1.94 billion, up 93% year over year, with adjusted earnings per share of $0.41 clearing analyst estimates. But the more telling number sits in the commercial segment, where US business grew 149% — a figure that has Wall Street scrambling to reprice the stock even as technical indicators flash warning signs.

CEO Alex Karp, never one for understatement, called the quarter “otherworldly” in remarks to the Wall Street Journal, pointing to surging demand for AI sovereignty solutions. The company has since lifted its full-year revenue guidance to $8.15–8.16 billion, up from a prior range of $7.66 billion, and raised its commercial forecast to more than $3.42 billion — growth of at least 134%.

The Analyst Stampede

The sell-side response has been emphatic. Deutsche Bank upgraded the stock from Hold to Buy, while Bank of America reaffirmed its purchase recommendation and lifted its price target to $255. Piper Sandler held its Overweight rating with a $230 target, and Northland Securities raised its 2026 EPS estimate from $1.08 to $1.24, with the 2027 figure moving from $1.39 to $1.53.

Phillip Securities joined the chorus this week, bumping its target to $215 from $202 while keeping a Buy rating. As one strategist might put it, these aren’t fresh signals so much as confirmations of a thesis already in motion — the Street, at least for now, isn’t doubting the operational acceleration.

The Valuation Tightrope

Yet the stock’s post-earnings trajectory tells a more complicated story. After touching an interim high of $171.84, shares have settled around $153.96 — still 14% below the 52-week peak of $179.98 reached in early November. The weekly gain stands at 3.4%, and the 30-day advance is a hefty 32%, but the technical backdrop is getting stretched: the relative strength index sits at 72.7, and the price now trades 33% above its 50-day moving average and 20% above the 200-day line.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Palantir?

That gap between momentum and mean reversion is the crux of the debate. Annualized volatility of 99% underscores just how violently this name can swing on headlines. A rule-of-40 score of 155 — far above the software sector norm — justifies a premium valuation, but it also leaves little room for error.

The Insider Signal

Adding a layer of nuance: CTO Shyam Sankar converted 35,000 Class-B shares to Class-A stock in early August and sold them between $153.07 and $157.52. The transactions fall under a pre-arranged trading plan established in March, making them legally unremarkable. Still, in a market already questioning how much upside remains, they offer skeptics a convenient talking point.

The Deciding Variable

The bull case rests entirely on one question: can US commercial growth stay in triple-digit territory? Government business expanded 90% in the same quarter — strong, but with a different margin profile that alone wouldn’t support the current multiple. A recent partnership with Mercury Systems to automate material planning and factory operations for US military programs further cements the defense footprint, though such deals rarely move the stock in the near term.

Should commercial momentum hold, the path to the 52-week high looks clear, and further guidance hikes become plausible. But a deceleration to even 100% growth — still an extraordinary number — could be read as a fracture in the narrative, triggering profit-taking in a tape that’s already overheated.

The next checkpoint arrives with third-quarter reporting, when investors will see whether the August guidance bump of at least 134% commercial growth holds up. Until then, the stock remains a study in contrasts: operational excellence meeting a valuation that leaves no room for disappointment.
