Palantir’s Insider Sell-Off Collides With a Wall Street That Can’t Agree on a Price

The optics could hardly be more awkward. Days after Palantir delivered blowout quarterly numbers and raised its full-year guidance, the company’s chief technology officer quietly converted 35,000 Class-B shares into Class-A stock and sold them on the open market at prices between $153.07 and $157.52. The August 6 transaction, executed through a pre-arranged Rule 10b5-1 trading plan, came just one day after director Lauren Elaina Friedman Stat unloaded 3,032 Class-A shares at an average of $165 each, pocketing roughly $500,280.

Neither sale was spontaneous — both were locked into trading plans months in advance, which blunts their signal value. But the timing, landing squarely in the glow of a 93% revenue surge, has given skeptics fresh ammunition in a debate that is already unusually heated.

A Bull-Bear Chasm Wide Enough to Drive Through

The market’s disagreement over Palantir’s fair value is now on full display. A survey of 32 analysts compiled by S&P Global on Monday produced a consensus buy rating, yet the individual price targets span an extraordinary range: from $80 on the bearish end to $255 at the bullish extreme. For a company now valued at roughly €357.78 billion, that dispersion signals a fundamental lack of agreement about what the AI darling is actually worth.

The bull case rests on numbers that are hard to argue with. US commercial revenue grew 149% year over year to $764 million in the second quarter, while government sales climbed 90% to $809 million. Rosenblatt’s John McPeake calculates free cash flow jumped 115% to $1.2 billion on a 63% margin — evidence, he argues, that Palantir’s model is generating real substance, not just growth. The company closed 220 deals worth at least $1 million, including 73 above the $10 million threshold.

Citi’s Tyler Radke lifted his target to $245 on August 4, citing accelerated revenue growth, record US commercial figures, and stronger contract metrics. A wave of other firms followed with increases between $156 and $225, with DA Davidson describing demand for Palantir’s AI solutions in the US as “parabolic.” The Deutsche Bank upgraded the stock to Buy on August 5, pointing to growing confidence in the AI-driven growth trajectory and customer retention, while Northland Securities raised its target to $200 the day before.

The Bearish Counterweight

The skeptics are not silent. Michael Burry continues to hold short positions against Palantir and other AI stocks, quipping on Friday that in “Trump’s market,” price currently doesn’t matter. Cathie Wood’s ARK Invest reportedly exited its Palantir position on Thursday. Cantor Fitzgerald’s Thomas Blakey remains the most cautious named voice, holding a neutral rating with a $156 target.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Palantir?

The technical picture adds another layer of tension. The stock’s RSI sits at 73.3, a classic overbought signal, and despite a 32.86% run over the past 30 days, the shares still trade 15.66% below their record high of €179.98 set on November 3, 2025. The stock closed Monday at €151.78.

Growth Guidance vs. Valuation Reality

Palantir’s second-quarter results, reported August 3, showed revenue of $1.935 billion, up 93% from a year earlier. The company raised its full-year 2026 revenue forecast to a range of $8.150 billion to $8.158 billion, while also lifting guidance for adjusted free cash flow to $4.5–$4.7 billion and adjusted operating income to $4.889–$4.897 billion. For the third quarter, management has guided to revenue between $2.16 billion and $2.164 billion, with adjusted operating income of $1.292–$1.296 billion.

The consensus price target of $189.90 implies an 8.37% upside over the next twelve months — a modest premium that suggests even the average analyst sees limited headroom at current levels. The company attributes its momentum to surging demand for “AI sovereignty” and its Artificial Intelligence Platform, a narrative that has resonated powerfully with both commercial and government clients.

Government Business: Growth and Controversy in Equal Measure

Palantir’s public-sector work continues to expand, but not without friction. The UN World Food Programme is reportedly close to renewing a five-year agreement covering the Digital Operations and Transformation System, despite a leaked internal audit from 2025 that flagged “high-priority” risks around data privacy and vendor dependency. Meanwhile, on August 6, Palantir filed a formal objection with the US General Services Administration, arguing that a proposed rule on procuring large language models is unlawful and would impede delivery of AI-powered solutions to government customers.

What Happens Next

The immediate test for Palantir is whether its US commercial growth can hold near recent levels and whether the company can hit or beat its third-quarter guidance. If those numbers hold, the bull case — that the raised forecast is a waypoint, not a ceiling — gains credibility. If growth decelerates noticeably, or if insider selling starts to look more like conviction than portfolio management, the overbought technical picture could quickly reclaim the spotlight.

For now, the stock sits at a crossroads where record fundamentals and record disagreement coexist. The next quarterly guidance will likely determine which force wins out.
