Nebius: The $41 Billion AI Infrastructure Bet That Keeps Defying Gravity

There are two ways to read the Nebius story right now, and both are true. One is a tale of staggering commercial momentum — a company whose revenue exploded by 684 percent in a single quarter, backed by a $2 billion commitment from the most important chipmaker on the planet. The other is a cautionary chart, with the stock still sitting roughly 37 percent below its June peak after a week that nearly triggered a forced liquidation of one of its largest shareholders.

The gap between those two narratives is where the real story lives.

The Nvidia Connection That Changes Everything

Nvidia’s stake in Nebius now stands at 9.3 percent — a position worth roughly $5 billion that goes far beyond passive ownership. The two companies are jointly building a cloud platform for robotics and “physical AI,” and Nvidia has pledged $2 billion to help Nebius scale more than 5 gigawatts of compute capacity by 2030.

That proximity to the GPU kingpin matters more than almost any other factor in today’s market, where access to hardware often determines which AI companies thrive and which stall. Nebius has also earned the status of “Reference Platform Cloud Partner” for Nvidia — a designation held by only a handful of cloud providers worldwide.

The financial impact is already visible. A multi-year contract with Reflection AI, signed in late July, locks in more than $1 billion in cloud revenue through 2029. First-quarter revenue hit $399 million, a 684 percent jump that demonstrates how quickly the Nvidia relationship translates into hard numbers.

A Near-Miss With Forced Liquidation

The fragility beneath that growth story surfaced this week. Situational Awareness, a hedge fund holding 5.6 percent of Nebius, faced a forced liquidation of its $16 billion portfolio. The market braced for a potential flood of shares hitting the market simultaneously.

Citadel stepped in and acquired the bulk of those positions at a discount, averting the fire sale. Nebius shares recovered more than 30 percent from Wednesday’s lows, yet the stock still trades 36.82 percent below its late-June all-time high of 261.00 euros. Over the past 30 days, the decline stands at 18.18 percent.

The episode underscored just how quickly sentiment can shift around a stock with annualized volatility approaching 148 percent.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nebius?

Institutional Accumulation Amid Retail Nervousness

While retail investors react to every swing, larger players appear to be using the turbulence as an entry point. Amundi increased its stake by 10.6 percent during the first quarter of 2026, with Janus Henderson and Morgan Stanley also building positions.

Technical indicators currently show neither overbought nor oversold conditions — a neutral reading that reflects the cautious stance of many market participants. The stock closed Friday at 164.90 euros, up 0.94 percent, though that quiet finish belies the turbulence of recent weeks.

The Finnish Expansion and the Question of Scale

Beyond the immediate market drama lies a more ambitious industrial agenda. Nebius is planning an “AI Factory” in Lappeenranta, Finland, with 310 megawatts of capacity and a $10 billion investment price tag. The project would rank among Europe’s largest dedicated AI computing facilities.

Finland’s power grid offers a particular advantage: a power usage effectiveness (PUE) rating as low as 1.1, a figure few other locations can match. The company recently activated its next-generation Nvidia “Vera Rubin” compute racks at its Mäntsälä data center on July 23, 2026 — a technical milestone that reinforces its position in the European market.

That market itself is taking shape for reasons beyond pure economics. European policymakers increasingly demand sovereign, locally anchored compute infrastructure rather than relying entirely on American hyperscalers. Nebius has positioned itself as one of the few credible European responses to that demand.

What the August Report Must Prove

The market capitalization of 41.69 billion euros means Nebius has outgrown its speculative phase. It is now a mid-cap infrastructure player with real contracts and real revenue. But the valuation demands sustained execution.

When Nebius reports second-quarter results on August 12, investors will be looking for evidence that the billion-dollar investments — the Reflection AI deal, the Vera Rubin deployment, the Lappeenranta plans — are translating into durable, profitable growth. A 684 percent revenue jump cannot repeat indefinitely without profitability following suit.

The more fundamental question concerns the business model itself. Can Nebius scale its “asset-light” partnership approach enough to become a genuine global competitor while retaining its identity as Europe’s sovereign AI champion? The answer will determine whether this stock eventually settles into a reliable infrastructure play or remains what it has been for months: a highly volatile barometer for the physical side of the AI revolution.
