Hensoldt’s Pre-Earnings Jitters: A €200 Million Radar Risk Shadows a 24% Rally

Hensoldt investors are heading into Friday’s half-year report with a curious mix of tailwinds and tripwires. The defence sensor specialist has seen its stock surge 24.15% over the past 30 days, closing Wednesday at €84.10, yet the shares remain 26.93% below their 52-week high from early October. That gap underscores a market still weighing the company’s operational momentum against unresolved risks — chief among them a €200 million radar contract tied to the recently cancelled F126 frigate programme.

The German defence ministry’s decision in late June to terminate the F126 project has left Hensoldt scrambling to assess the financial hit on its subcontract for radar systems. That €200 million exposure is expected to feature prominently in the half-year report, and analysts will be watching closely for any provisions or write-downs. The timing is awkward: Hensoldt had only just raised its guidance for adjusted free cash flow in June, now targeting roughly 50% of adjusted EBITDA, up from 40%, thanks to faster-than-expected customer prepayments from the Bundeswehr.

BlackRock Trims, But Insiders Buy

A regulatory filing on Thursday revealed that BlackRock has edged its total stake in Hensoldt down from 4.96% to 4.92%, with direct voting rights falling to 3.10%. While the move is modest — institutional investors routinely adjust positions by a few tenths of a percentage point — the timing, just a day before earnings, adds a layer of intrigue. Still, the sell-off is dwarfed by insider confidence: CEO Oliver Dörre snapped up shares worth around €172,230 in late June at prices between €67.98 and €69.50, well below current levels.

The first quarter already offered a taste of the trajectory. Revenue jumped 25.57% year-on-year to €496 million, while the loss per share narrowed from minus €0.26 to minus €0.16. For the full year, the consensus analyst estimate sits at earnings per share of €1.82. Whether Hensoldt’s management confirms that outlook on Friday will be pivotal — any disappointment could trigger a sharp reversal after the recent rally.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Hensoldt?

Beyond the Balance Sheet: New Deals and New Horizons

Operationally, Hensoldt has been far from idle. On Tuesday, the company handed over its newly developed CAIRAS missile warning system to partner Helsing for integration into the autonomous combat aircraft project “CA-1 Europa.” In mid-July, it invested €15 million in defence-tech startup Project Q as part of a Series A round, aiming to bolster software-centric capabilities. And last week, Defence Minister Boris Pistorius visited Hensoldt’s Oberkochen site to inaugurate expanded production capacity for optics and sensor systems.

On the civilian side, Hensoldt Avionics has secured a foothold in India. Since February, the division has been partnering with The ePlane Company on the e200X electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft, alongside SASMOS HET Technologies and Azista Composites. The project targets certification and manufacturing in India, giving Hensoldt a non-defence revenue stream in a fast-growing aviation market.

Dividend Growth Amid Losses

Shareholders have not been forgotten. The annual general meeting in May approved a 10% dividend increase to €0.55 per share for fiscal 2025, and analysts expect a further rise to €0.697 for 2026. That payout growth, despite the company still operating at a net loss, signals management’s confidence in the underlying cash generation.

With the half-year report due Friday morning, followed by an analyst call, the market’s focus will be on margins, order backlog trends, and the F126 fallout. The BlackRock trimming is background noise; the real signals come from the numbers themselves.
