Rocket Lab’s 58% Slide Masks a $2.2 Billion Backlog and a Pivotal August Catalyst

The disconnect between Rocket Lab’s operational trajectory and its stock price has rarely been wider. While the company has locked in a record $2.2 billion order book, secured a $266 million Space Force contract, and just announced an $8 billion acquisition of Iridium Communications, its shares have been shredded in a sector-wide rout. On Friday, the stock closed at €56.40, down 8.29% on the day and nearly 25% over the past month. That leaves the equity 57.85% below its 52-week high of €133.80 set on May 27 — a collapse that has little to do with the company’s own execution.

The sell-off has been exacerbated by two factors that, on closer inspection, look more like noise than signal. First, the stock breached a psychologically important level tied to the Iridium deal’s structure. Second, CEO Peter Beck sold shares in early July. But those sales were executed through a Rule 10b5-1 trading plan established on March 27, 2026 — a routine diversification mechanism, not a vote of no confidence. The market’s reaction, in other words, appears technically driven rather than fundamentally warranted.

A Vertically Integrated Bet That the Market Hasn’t Priced

Rocket Lab’s strategic narrative has shifted dramatically. No longer just a small-satellite launch provider, the company is positioning itself as a vertically integrated space powerhouse through the $8 billion Iridium acquisition — a mix of cash and stock that promises recurring satellite-service revenue to replace the cyclicality of the launch business. The logic is sound, but the market has yet to fully digest it.

The operational evidence is mounting. Beyond the $2.2 billion backlog, Rocket Lab completed the Victus Haze rapid-response mission for the U.S. Space Force in June and secured a major GEO satellite contract in May. It also holds a role in the National Security Space Launch program, a contract vehicle worth up to $17 billion. The Neutron medium-lift rocket, whose debut is targeted for the fourth quarter of 2026, remains the single most important catalyst for the long-term thesis.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rocket Lab?

Yet the stock continues to bleed. The annualized 30-day volatility stands at 88.21%, making violent swings in both directions the norm. The 14-day relative strength index has fallen to 30.8, flirting with oversold territory, while the share price sits 16.27% below its 200-day moving average of €67.36 — a warning for long-term support, but also a sign of technical exhaustion rather than a fundamental re-rating.

The Fed, the Neutron, and the August 10 Deadline

Short-term sentiment will be shaped by the Federal Reserve’s meeting on July 28-29. A dovish outcome could provide the relief that growth stocks like Rocket Lab desperately need. But the real test comes on August 10, when the company reports second-quarter results after the U.S. market close. Positive operational updates could serve as the trigger for a trend reversal.

Analysts see a consensus price target of €100.50, implying 78.2% upside from Friday’s close. That gap between execution and valuation is striking. The company has already delivered on its promises — the Iridium deal, the Space Force contracts, the record backlog. The question now is whether the market is willing to look past the sector-wide turbulence and refocus on that substance before the next hard numbers land.

For investors who can stomach the volatility, the stock still shows a 37.56% gain over the past twelve months. The current weakness looks less like a structural breakdown and more like a correction within an intact uptrend — provided Neutron stays on schedule and the Iridium integration proceeds without a hitch.
